Sat down at the bar. A few waiters around. No one approaches me to give me a menu or anything. Eventually I flag a waiter down and request a menu. Waiter never returns to take my order. I leave without ever ordering anything.

Hosted my partners surprise 40th birthday party here. Held it in the billiards room. The room itself was large and spacious. There was pool tables accessible to use as well. I found the lighting a bit dim and it was quit warm. However I would come back as those are two minor issues. We had one serve constantly and one who helped some. I can’t remember our servers name but for having a group of larger than 20 she did great. I had pre ordered some food and the pizza never did show up, when I asked the waitress she came to show me the invoice she received it showed the pizza was not on the invoice. I didn’t get charged for it so that was okay. The wings that came were mediocre in flavour. Everything else that was ordered was really good. I forgot plates for the cake and they graciously provided some. I made sure to tip the waitress well. Prior to the party David had been in contact with me and we communicated back and forth between email. I appreciate that theirs was communication to make sure everything was in place prior to the party.
Id definitely come back, I’d also like to try the cafe that seemed to be full every time I or one of the party groups went by.

Busy, because it is good. Solid tap selection brewed on site. Well above average pub fare. Service is definitely a high point. (note: I think this place is being review bombed. I would discount all the negative reviews about racism. It is all BS)

Extremely disappointed. My sister excitedly called to reserve a spot here for her birthday dinner tonight. When we arrived, we mentioned our reservation to a blonde waitress and were met with a very nonchalant attitude. In the 30 min after being seated, not one waitress came to our table. Despite constant glances at us, they continued to simply walk past us like they didn't see us at all! It might have been understandable if the night was busy, but it wasn't...which made us question if we were being purposely neglected/discriminated against for some reason.... It's very disheartening to come to an establishment and feel so incredibly unwelcome. We ended up just leaving. I would not recommend Barely Works to anyone.

I got food poisoning after eating here. Don’t order the poutine, one of the worst one I’ve ever had.

I was celebrating my anniversary. Unfortunately the romantic environment got ruined after we saw a poor group of international students being discriminated.

In six years in Waterloo, I never knew what discrimination felt like—until I had the misfortune of stepping foot into this charmingly grimy establishment. Don’t let the summer’s beauty fool you into missing the dirtiness of this place. It all started with a blonde waitress who gave us the side-eye and seemed to think serving us was beneath her. When we asked for water, she heard our accents and promptly decided we didn’t exist until she took the rest of our order. I won’t bore you with more details of this farcical experience, but a few minutes later, she outright said, “I don’t want to serve you.”
We asked for the manager five times—five!—until he graced us with his presence. When we suggested that maybe, just maybe, her behavior had a dash of “racism,” the manager immediately retorted, “I don’t want to talk to you,” and strutted away. Oh, the hospitality! We thought this place had more class, but clearly, we were mistaken. If you enjoy being ignored and disrespected, this is your spot. For everyone else, avoid this place like the plague.
Go to Ethel’s lounge instead. Nicer and better environment (:

I had an extremely disappointing experience at this pub. The waitress was not only rude but also displayed racist behavior. Despite having my national ID, which has always been sufficient in my 6 years in Waterloo, she insisted on seeing my passport for drinks. We brought our passports, but she still refused to serve us and said “honestly, I don’t want to serve you”!

For the sake of food, you'd literally make the same meal at home, better, for 1/2 the price. Trash food. Venue is nice. Come here for drinks only. Nice staff. Zero sum game.

Got the smokehouse burger, it was obviously beef patties from the frozen foods section at the grocery store. The server came by a couple times. Overall I would not go out of my way to come back.
