⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3.5/5)
**Old-school Chinese spot in Astoria** — nothing fancy about the menu, but the staff was accommodating when I mentioned I’m vegan. They went off-menu and made me a couple of custom dishes that hit the spot.
The **Kung Pao Tofu** was solid — I expected a little more kick since it’s a Sichuan dish, but it was flavorful and satisfying. The portion was huge (hello leftovers!) though a bit light on tofu, probably since the meat was swapped out. I added more spice and tofu at home, and it made for a great next-day meal.
The real standout was the **General Tso Tofu**, another off-menu creation they kindly prepared for takeout. The texture of the fried tofu was impressive — tender inside and the sauce had great balance.
All in all, I’d give Golden Star a **3.5 for food**, but extra points for the friendly service and willingness to accommodate vegan requests. I live over in **Long Beach, WA**, so it’s just a quick trip across the bridge — and yes, I’d definitely go back next time I’m in Astoria.

This is a old school americanized chinese food place. You can choose from a variety of combo plates or order your preferred entree. Prices are very reasonable. Service is always fast and friendly. The building is a bit weathered inside and out. The bar in the back always has locals in it.

Blast from the past, old-school Chinese with the kind of meals I remember as a kid. My dining partner and I enjoyed our meals at the Golden Star. The lunch specials are pretty good-sized and fairly reasonable price-wise. The Hot and Sour Soup was delicious! I ordered the Cashew Chicken which had a ton of vegetables and liberal nuts mixed throughout the dish. She ordered the Chicken and Green Beans with BBQ Pork. Both dishes were very flavorful. Can't say either one of us were a fan of the egg roll, though... Rather slimy inside and very very salty. Overall, though, tasty meals. (I'd skip the slots at the bar, however. Very stingy slots for the amount of $ and time we put in. Just saying... Go for the food). 😊

The hot and sour soup was more gelatinous than it should be for being "fresh" and hot, really ruined the food experience, please don't offer this on the menu. Rice portions are on the smaller side for the general tsoa chicken to taste more like American cuisine than Panda Express. Crab rangoons were delightful but missing sweet and sour sauce.
I don't like to leave bad reviews, but I need to remind myself not to order the soup here again.

First of all, I’m so sorry in advance for leaving this review. I never write reviews but I feel like I need to speak up about this. Saw the good reviews going through town and was craving Chinese food…
Ordered orange chicken, chow fun, and sechuan pork for take out. The sechuan pork was mostly lettuce and flavorless and soft… and the orange chicken might as well have been plain fried chicken with no flavor, even with the “sauce” on the side. Panda Express’ orange chicken is actually 10x better. I also asked for hot oil to add some spice and I think they literally gave me grease from a pan.
Again, I feel awful typing this. The guy at the front taking our order was very nice. I am thoroughly disappointed in the food.

The bar is nicer than the restaurant. The service just wasn't there. We had to get up and find our own napkins. The food was OK. I would go back to play video poker in the bar and grab sesame chicken, but that's about it.

i ordered chicken chow mein with the description of it having egg noodles, only to get my order and it simply ONLY had bean sprouts and NO egg noodles. what kind of chow mein has crispy chips as egg noodles stir fried with chicken and veggies, make it make sense because nobody wants a mouthful of BLAND VEGETABLES (the food was not seasoned at all not even salt and pepper) for a “chinese” restaurant you’d think they would know what egg noodles stir fried with veggies means but clearly not due to the lack of NOODLES and FLAVOR in my meal 0/10 would never order again

THE Worst!!!! Had Lo Mein, noodles were like rubber, cold, no sauce. Chicken no seasonings. The worst meal I have ever had!!!!
Uncle Rogers would say, you are the worst cook. Worst than Jamie Oliver.

We each had a different combo meal and we were each very pleased with the food. We were impressed with the combo meals selections, not just the standard. And plenty to take home. ?
Parking: Quite spacious lot plus street parking.
