The sushi was good but not worth the price.

We came here with my family to celebrate my mom’s birthday and were really disappointed with the experience. Our reservation was for 7:15, but we weren’t seated until 7:40 — even though there’s a deposit required to book. I understand the need for a deposit, but I think at the very least a table should be ready at the reserved time.

After we finally ordered, it took a little over an hour for part of our food to arrive. We noticed that every other table around us — even ones that arrived and ordered after we did — got their food before us. My dad spoke with the manager, who insinuated that the free green beans we received were enough to make up for the delay — even though we were originally told they were due to a kitchen error. The manager wasn’t helpful, and we still waited another 30 minutes for the rest of our food, which didn’t come out until around 9:00 PM.

I work in this industry, so I understand that delays happen and I don’t mind waiting — but waiting over an hour with no communication and no real resolution from the manager is unacceptable. I was born and raised in this town and try a new restaurant almost every week, and this was simply not good service compared to any other restaurant I’ve visited.

For a $300 bill, we expected far better service, communication, and timeliness. Unfortunately, this was not the kind of experience we were hoping for on a special occasion, and we will not be returning.

Service is quite good, but the food doesn't exactly match the price in terms of quality or value. Omakase menu featured interesting items bit a bit unimaginative and classic dishes were not executed well.

I’ve dined here a handful of times now with medium sized groups of family and friends, and always leave feeling giddy from an exquisite meal and wonderful service.
If you’re looking for incredibly fresh sushi and unique flavors, this is the spot.

Get the Hamachi kama! 🤤

Really, really good sushi! Sat at the bar and had prompt service. Got the edamame which was also really good. Overall a great experience.

It’s been several years since I’ve been here. Had a guest from out of town due to a family emergency and wanted to make a bad day better.
It was later in the evening and we were finally relaxed after a massage.
Called to be courteous and ask if 8:30 was too late as they were closing at 9. The manager went into detail about how they were short staffed and really wanted to close early. We asked if take out would be okay and he reluctantly said yes.
Both settled on a $35 poke bowl each. Paid the $70 and gave them a tip as he reminded us what an inconvenience this was. I asked if his name was on the receipt so we could thank him in a review, he gave an awkward look in the bag and said yes.

Once home, we opened the containers to find about 1/3c of poke mix, 1/3c seaweed, and a handful of stale chips.

I understand prices have increased, but not to this level.

When I called to say we were not okay with the order and I would like to come to an agreement, he said they have an old POS system and he was only able to refund the entire amount. I said I did not want that and also wanted to leave the tip for the staff. He said again that could not be done.

He literally told me that he would have to refund the entire amount and not to worry - he would “deal with the repercussions” and reminded me that they went out of their way to make sure we got food at all, even though they didn’t have a dishwasher.

I wish he had said no to us getting an order at all and we had not had this bad experience to cap off a sad day.

Too bad the reviews on Bend Foodies Facebook group and other sites are true - I didn’t want to believe my once fav is now a permanent memory, but I refuse to be treated this way.

Still don’t know Dude’s name because we never got that receipt he pretended to glance at in the bag…

I've eaten here twice for omakase (bar seating, tasting menu style). It's definitely pricey ($135/pp), but I'd suggest Kanpai as the best restaurant in Bend. The quality of food, presentation, and flavor is exceptional. Both occasions here were memorable, and I'll certainly return at some point.

Wonderful sushi, delightful staff, be sure to make a reservation.

An unfortunate experience. This restaurant is probably just fortunate that people don’t know the food could be better.
We really looked forward to enjoying many of the items on the menu but the restaurant was so busy we ordered Takeout; Agedashi Tofu, Hamachi Kama, salmon nigiri, tempura etc.

What was served as the Agedashi Tofu was absolutely not how this dish is typically prepared. Fried, thin slices of firm tofu? The batter was hard and chewy. The soup base for the tofu and the dipping sauce for the Tempura were in confusing containers for the portion sizes needed.
We ordered two servings of rice; what we received was a portion enough for one bowl and it had soy sauce on parts of the rice, like it was leftover rice or had been used for something else.
The order of Rainbow Roll had been packaged to-go, but someone drizzled Soy Sauce on top so when we got home (5 minutes away) the rice was all soggy, and the rolls fell apart.
The Hamachi Kama was decent - I’d say a little dry but it had good flavor.
The most disappointing was the Nigiri which had most likely been prepared hours in advance but left out without being covered, so the fish was dried out and had no rich umami flavor.

Overall, incredibly disappointing especially for the $200 price point our order totaled.
I’d strongly recommend taking better care of your ingredients, packing orders to go properly so they arrive fresh and not soggy. I’d rethink the Agedashi tofu dish and please use medium-firm tofu…
If someone orders rice please don’t pour soy sauce on top.

Really great rolls but the seaweed salad was on a different level.

Bit noisy for a quiet date spot but will be going back.

We’ve been coming here for about 12+ years and it honestly used to be our favorite sushi spot. Before the pandemic, we would stop in for happy hour (portions were smaller than normal which was okay since the price was less), but now the size of the regular menu sushi rolls are “happy hour sized” and twice the price!! We’re super bummed….Kanpai is no longer what it used to be. We spent over $200 for dinner and drinks tonight and we were still left a bit hungry. Sad to say we will probably not be returning any time soon. Hoping that they will go back to what they used to be : (
