Taro and his staff at Akira provide an atmosphere, quality of food, and elite service that is second to none. I have lived and eaten at high end Sushi houses throughout the West Coast and I can say without prejudice that Akira is the best of the best. I had a decent day going energetically and went in for a date night tonight, and through Taro's great and honest energy, amazing food, and supporting nature, I left happy and uplifted. Enjoy Akira and you will love the visit!

We came here on a busy night & no reservation! The food was sooooooo delicious. We asked for a chirashi bowl and it was so so so good. We sat at the bar and chef asked what our preferences were too. Erik makes some seriously delicious dessert, id get whatevers on the menu! we had the rhubarb chocolate mochi cake and the plum wine cheesecake. So sad i dont have a photo. Felt very cared for here. 10/10 recommend.

Miso was good. Pork belly bun taco was fantastic. The 3 sushi items we ordered did not come out correctly, we thought. But mrs v roll sounds like mr v roll and other names sound similar as well. So we just ate and figured they made a mistake. Turns out we were given a different tables order. And the staff never figured it out or brought out our actual order. So we paid our orders cost of $100 but received the other tables lesser order. We notified a staff member before we left and he did not apologize or ask to remedy the situation in any way.

I came across this restaurant while searching for reviews and recommendations from a friend. The name had a slightly more casual feel, which drew me in. I sat at the bar table, watching the chef prepare sushi right in front of me as Ienjoyed my meal.
The meal began with a few simple appetizers: potato, beet, and miso soup. The beet was worth recommending, but the potato lacked seasoning and tasted overly plain. One thing that struck me as odd was the miso soup—it had an oily surface, which felt unfamiliar and slightly off-putting.
The nigiri was skillfully crafted by the chef. The rice portion was well-balanced in relation to the size and thickness of the fish, and the wasabi was placed between the rice and fish, with a light soy-based glaze brushed on top—giving it a traditional touch. The chef’s expertise was evident in the delicate knife work on the fish, making it more tender, and in the personalized sauces applied to each piece. These techniques reflected a high level of craftsmanship.
However, I felt the rice lacked depth of flavor, and the fresh wasabi had little to no kick. There was no sharpness when biting into the sushi. Perhaps this was an intentional choice to appeal to a broader audience with milder flavors, but personally, I would have preferred a more distinctly Japanese taste.
As for feedback to the restaurant: I believe more care should be taken when plating dishes—any spills or smudges around the plate should be cleaned before serving. Also, if a dish is returned due to lack of flavor, the restaurant should be willing to accept it (unless the customer has already eaten more than a third of it). Refusing a return over a single $6 item could prevent a customer who spends over $150 per visit from returning.
Aside from the overly simplistic and somewhat rude service from one of the servers, I found the restaurant overall to be quite good. The entrance featured a subtly maintained garden, decorated posters and artwork, and a second-floor dining area with casual seating for groups—all of which gave off a trendy, hip vibe.
I do plan to return, and I recommend this place.

They took all the comic books out upstairs, which was a huge bummer for me, but they still have good food and drinks.

I don’t ever want to eat sushi anywhere else! Gratitude to the whole team. Excellent in every aspect. I recommend the dine and dash experience. If you’re not a fan of the raw, the ribs are absolutely the best I’ve ever had. The duck bun tacos are bomb. I don’t think there’s a way to go wrong here. Let’s keep this place thriving in our community, Eugene 😘

Okay, so in the past I’ve LOVED Akira and have even thought about the food when I’m not there, but something’s happened recently. When my wife and I went there tonight we waited over an hour for any food. I could understand if the kitchen was understaffed, or if they were slammed, but the restaurant was not slammed, and we did not get a consistent explanation. The table next to us was told that there were just a lot of food tickets tonight. Sure. Cool. I can get that, but when we asked, we were unapologetically told that this was just “the style” of the restaurant. I don’t know. We’ve never had this bad of service, so I don’t buy it. When it comes to drinks, we saw others seated at the bar arriving and getting served after us all while the bartender was just chatting it up with them while we waited almost 30 minutes for a simple cocktail. Again, I totally get if they were slammed, but the bartender did not at all seemed overwhelmed and seemed to be taking his time with the people who would eventually be tipping him directly. Don’t get me wrong. The food was amazing, and I will still go back, but something’s definitely changed with this place, and I’m not holding my breath.

Food was great when we eventually got it. Drinks were fine. After ordering we waited over an hour for our food to start arriving. This happens, not a big deal. But, there was no communication until we asked. Then, they forgot one of the entrees and we waited another 30+ minutes for that. All told we were there for over 2 hours (with no air conditioning). Wait staff apologized when we looked frustrated, but didn't offer anything to improve our experience. A really disappointing experience. The food we did eventually eat was quite good, but hardly worth the experience. If they can't manage to service the upstairs portion well, they should just do a bar up there.

Hands down the BEST restaurant in Eugene, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who has said that. Friendliest staff in the whole wide world. The food was fresh, delicious, and very unique! We came on a Monday, and it was a hot day (in the 90s) so there was no one there. It was a truly memorable experience.

The food was incredible but the service was quite bad.

I knew the place would be packed so I made sure to get there before they opened and was the first person to be sat.

Despite only one other table being sat at the resturant the waiter was short with me when answering questions regarding their cocktails/mocktails and did not check up on us for additional food or drinks.

I got a total of 1 drink and 1 appetizer before the waiter showed up with the check at most 30 minutes after sitting down.

I left feeling unvalued as a customer and perhaps even profiled for being a younger couple sitting at a relatively upscale restaurant.
