I hate leaving a poor review but man, I spent a lot of money tonight for a terrible meal, terrible service & a rude host staff. Local Ocean was recommended to us by locals. People told me this was the best restaurant in Newport. I’m sorry to say I completely disagree. It was the worst place we ate at during our visit. It might be one of my least favorite restaurants I’ve ever been to. The host staff was extremely unhelpful when I called for a reservation. When I left the restaurant they were too busy talking to themselves than to thank me for coming in. We sat in the downstairs area of the restaurant & froze - doors open on a cold evening. I think I kept hoping the food would make everything worth it. Sadly, it did not.
I let our server know this was our first time at the restaurant & he offered no guidance at all on the menu. If I asked if something was good, that’s what he recommended. I didn’t feel welcome in the restaurant, more like I was an inconvenience. My server didn’t make up for the lousy host staff.
Then the food came… every person in my group agreed the food was bland & I was surprised how expensive it all was for how bad it was. I’ve had better seafood in Utah, where I’m from. I’m sure it was very fresh seafood but the chef seemed very uninspired. I have traveled extensively, lived in various places in the US & abroad & have eaten at incredible restaurants. Very sorry to say this place ranks at the bottom of the barrel for me.
To add insult to injury, they charge a 20% service fee to every table then say they don’t expect tips but appreciate them. Having worked in restaurants I feel strongly about tipping but nothing infuriates me more than an establishment that doesn’t pay their people a decent wage. If the food & service are great, servers should have no problem getting great tips. Instead they gouge customers on price of food then gouge AGAIN with a 20% service fee then AGAIN with a tip. I will never, ever eat here again.

Great fresh seafood here. Imaginary menu! Great view! Make a reservation. We loved the food, period!

Just went today with a group. Despite the size of the group, service was excellent with a lot of personal attention. Food was prepared quickly and it was outstanding.

Great service, creative menu, locally sourced seafood, a delicious meal - highly recommend eating here - wish we lived closer so we could come back often. We had a reservation so avoided the long wait - this place is popular.

We live locally, and have waited 5 years to try Local Ocean. It just seems better suited to tourists. Hesitantly, this year for our anniversary we decided to give it a shot. I got the fishwives stew. Crab legs in the bottom of a thick tomatoe based stew, prefect for getting all over yourself trying to crack. Shrimp were so over cooked, i could barely chew them. Same with the clams and mussels. The 1 single bay scallop was good. Rockfish was also very over cooked and dry, even in a soup. My wife got the new York strip and added shrimp. Her steak came out well done, and shrimp very tough and over cooked. The mushrooms on the steak aren't edible. Like bad calamari. Just like chewing a rubber band. The 20% service charge was a surprise also. Our waiter was awesome, so he got a 30% tip. So 50% in tip fees, brought us to $198 for two of us to get the least appetizing seafood we've had in Newport. I can't complain in person, I don't do confrontation and don't like to embarrass anyone in public anymore. But I'll write this for everyone to read.

Awesome menu, service, and atmosphere. They have a variety of fresh oysters to pick from. The oysters from Netarts Bay were super briny and clean ?. We were also very pleasantly surprised at their non-alcoholic options. We are former drinkers but still like to have something special to sip with dinner. Great restaurant. We will definitely come back.

Very good fish restaurant right on the harbor in Newport.
We found value for money good.
Be sure to try the white tuna.

My niece wanted a dish that she had seen on Google and asked if it was still available, then the chef came to our table and apologized and explained that the dishes change depending on the season and that unfortunately they are not available at the moment .
We found the boss to be very attentive and friendly, which is not a given.

Great food, sizable portions, fresh seafood and super nice and helpful staff. Joaquin was excellent in recommendations, quick delivery and the ability to describe every dish to the levels that I can almost taste it before it was even served ?. Smoked salmon deviled egg is good, roasted garlic & dungeness soup is very good, but Moqueca de Priče (Brazilian Stew) was quite delicious - lemony sour coconut broth with a lot of seafood in it...wish I could have spent drink with it, but...driving....

Delicious lunch, beautiful location, our server wasn't that good..came up missing and had to ask for water multiple times. I was excited to have a lovely lunch in such a beautiful location.. I expected the service to be amazing, too.
Tried to purchase from the market, also, was ignored, so moved on.

Latest visit was a let down from a past visit (Nov. 2024)
Salmon bisque was incredibly acidic, but had a generous amount of salmon in it. It was served just warm, and should have been hot for a rainy cold day, which is why we ordered soup to begin with. The "Focaccia" bread was boring white bread, not the focaccia bread I am used to. Wife and I agree most of the food seemed unseasoned, lacking flavor, or salt. Her crab soup was also just warm. Fish in main meal was generous. Tuna Rueben turned out soggy, Fries incredibly bland. Fish n chips, kind of same thing. But definitely nice chunks of fish meat throughout the meal, so that's a plus. The room upstairs was a tad chilly, not a big deal. The mood when we came up was super off. Dead silent other than utensils. It was just off, and kind of set the stage for our visit. Anyway, I can't believe the difference in experience we had from our last visit. It was something we were looking forward to and we talked about the disappointment all the way back to the hotel in Lincoln City. $100 down the drain. Bummer.
Hoping the feedback is beneficial to the business. Thank you.

Tuna reuben sandwich was great! That will keep me coming back for more. Wife loved the seafood pasta. Nice service, cheerful folks, clean place, good water, neat artwork around. Reasonably fair pricing, especially compared to some other restaurants nowadays that charge more for less flavor/quality. Value makes a difference for us, was it worth it, would we do it again? Yes.
Thank you.
