Went here on a Sunday afternoon to hear A Fine Mess which is a trio of mature gentlemen who play Irish folk songs. It was very entertaining and the menu has a large selection of pub food from hamburgers to Cajun mac and cheese (which was delicious). The prices are moderate, the place could use a little updating but overall it was a fun afternoon.
On a trip with 2 girlfriends in May, we saw this place while looking for things to see/places to eat on line. Had second thoughts as taxi drove into the neighborhood, but so glad we chose to go in. The music was great, the food good. It was packed with people and yet we still had good service by the young waitress bouncing between the tables and bar. I can recommend this place for an enjoyable evening of great music and good southern style food.
It's the music! The food is traditional, basic Southern fare; fried fish - deep fried whole catfish pieces or catfish tenders, shrimp, jambalaya, fried oysters, Cajun Mac n' Cheese, Gumbo, Steak Bites, and pretty good appetizers - hot wings, crab cakes and so on - good selection. But the MAIN REASON to go here is for the music!! They do a top notch job of curating excellent blues (and everything related and unrelated) every single night of the week!! Always good. Been here many times and keep going back because, when in doubt, Catfish Lou's.
OK so the neighborhood is dark and industrial and we walked a really long distance as we took public transport. It was safe, but we were the only ones on the street. SO - if you are visitng - Uber or Lyft on over! Catfish is a really nice, cozy type bar with a nice little older (but not totally) crowd. Go hear some good blues music and it will pick you up! They had a terrific band the Friday night we were there. The owner is a really nice woman who was on-premises. Plenty of room to dance and you will want to. Wish we'd been hungry, we saw lots of people getting food but we weren't so we don't know how good it would be. My guess is - good. Everything else was.
We had already eaten dinner but we wanted ro hear some blues and have a drink. Came across this place and glad we did. What a great place if you love live blues. Next time I'm in Portland I'll make sure to eat at Catfish Lou's. Had to guve 5 stars for the music alone.
