Cheerful Tortoise Reviews
I’m new to the Cheerful Tortoise and I’ve been driving by it most of my life. I had no idea that it’s been around for over 75 years which is pretty amazing… And it is right in the middle of Portland State University and is a home away from home for people who need a place to go on holidays or special occasions when everybody else has family.
I love that it is a sports bar that allows kids and I look forward to taking them there for taco night and also for wings.

This place is a dive. The staff can be very snippy and on top of that I won’t support a bigoted, hypocritical, racist, homophobic owner. This business is not in line with Portland values. Take your money to one of the deserving bars in Portland that actually care about Portland and the people.
I will never support an establishment owned by a bigot.

The Cheerful Tortoise is a lively spot with a cozy, college-like atmosphere and a surprising variety of drinks. Located by PSU, it attracts many college students and regulars of all ages. The food is better than expected, with popular options like chicken wings, which are said to be the best in Portland, and large, loaded nachos. The Mac and Cheese is also a favorite among visitors. There are plenty of activities to enjoy, such as pool, karaoke on Sunday and Wicked Wednesday, and DJs like DJ Wicked and DJ Good Fortune, who bring great music and skills. The place features a big fire pit and pool tables in the back, creating a fun environment. The staff, led by owner Amy, are friendly and welcoming, helping to foster a warm and community-focused vibe. It’s a great spot near downtown that offers affordable prices and is wheelchair accessible, as it is street level. The restaurant’s history and sense of community make it a unique and beloved Portland dive bar. Visitors often enjoy the large portions and fun atmosphere, making it a place worth returning to regularly.
