Really enjoy their latte's here, but the pastry options are truly garbage. Seating is funky and cool but not super friendly in terms of popping in with a friend to chat. People try to sit alone at one of the massive tables, instead of the bar stools (where is the logic in that), so you have to share - this is of course fine, but if you want to chat a bit (we were very respectful and quiet) ... be prepared for some glares and stares. Not the best vibe on any of my five visits to this location.
My opinion, the best coffee in Portland. I've been coming here to the Grand location since they opened. For the first 5 years, amazing staff. I came as much for the coffee as for the friendliness. Lately though a few of the Baristas have been very rude. I would recommend some customer service training all around. I am surprised this behavior is tolerated. I wonder how many customers they have lost because of the service or lack thereof.
If this continues, I can't imagine it will help Coava's profits. I won't be coming back.

I truly love Coava's coffee, great service, and vibe :) The only downside is with their tea. They don't have tea sachets, so you're getting like 12 oz of tea for $4.00... a huge rip off :/

2 stars for service. The lady working the cashier should not be in customer service. I'm new to the area and was going to ask what some fun things in the area to do were. I asked if she was friendly and she said "no"
Next the black americano was bitter. Their lates may be good. But their black coffee is not.
The atmosphere is nice. But that's about it.

We decided to check out this café after reading a review from a well-known food critic. The atmosphere is really interesting—it has a classic industrial loft style that brings to mind the late 19th or early 20th century. However, I felt it could be a bit more comfortable for guests. I wish they had more individual tables for better privacy, instead of just chairs lined up along the wall where everyone can see what you're doing. Adding some armchairs and couches would make the place feel cozier without ruining the vibe.
The service was the most disappointing part. They don't ask for names when taking orders, which led to an awkward moment when a latte was placed on the counter that wasn't ours—it belonged to someone else. I don't want to accidentally take someone else's coffee, and I'm sure no one else does either. Simply asking for names could easily prevent this kind of mix-up.
When it comes to the menu, they offer pretty basic options. I'm sensitive to sugar and was hoping for a simple latte made with unsweetened almond milk, but they only had the sweetened kind (at least they were aware of that). The person at the counter didn't suggest any alternatives, and I didn't ask because I assumed they didn't have any. I also inquired about nitro coffee, but they didn't have it.
On the bright side, I noticed they serve water alongside espresso, which is a nice touch you don't often see in U.S. coffee shops.
Despite these issues, the regular latte my wife ordered tasted pretty good, and she asked me to come back—which we will, but unfortunately only for her, since they don't have options that work for me.
The prices were reasonable, but they only offer one size for takeout cups.
I understand that simplicity can be beautiful, but sometimes it goes a bit too far. It would be great if the café could be more accommodating to customers like me who prefer coffee without sugar.
Parking: We visited on Sunday and free street parking was available. However, the crossings were not in service and it seemed a bit dangerous to cross the main street.

Love the relax atmosphere with great coffee selections. No double with their expertises. Just a point that maybe we prefer the lighter roasted beans for pour over to the one they used.

tremendous coffee ☕️ not a good place to bring someone who is new to specialty coffee though…definitely some snobbiness present when the person I met there asked for a Carmel macchiato - there are ways to say that you don’t offer that without being rude or stuck up

Great coffee and very nice location!
Got the java papatong and it was rich, delicious and well-extracted. Definitely got some of that black tea notes, as well as some dried fruit. Wonderful coffee.
The location is spacious and rustic. Lots of seating and open space. Great place to hang out!
Enjoyed my time here--a wonderful spot to buy beans or just chill!

There is a Reddit thread that rates Coava as the best coffee with the rudest baristas. Let that guide you.
