Great food..
Fantastic experience -- the chicken liver mousse with deep fried brioche was incredible as were the French fries which had a near-miraculous crisp to them.
Dinner for four. Food very good, flavorful but not silly. And I like that the menu is small, the focus on each dish. But ...
The noise level was ridiculous. People were screaming to be heard, which of course cascaded. A real shame. We go out in company to talk with each other while we eat. We couldn't. We will not be back.
Wonderful neighborhood restaurant. It's absolutely beautiful inside and we can tell this restaurant is a real labor of love. The food is delicious and the cocktails are the best I've had in Portland (honestly!). Glad they have reservations now! We'll be back!
Everything was absolutely outstanding. Devil eggs, panisse, crudo, onion soup, the fries, the gnocchi, the steak, all cooked to absolute perfection. Best French restaurant Ive had in the US in 10 year’s living here.
Our meal was average. We tried a little bit of everything. Food was ok but nothing special. Our server was competent. We will not be going back. Too many other better Portland restaurants to choose from.
The good:
Hosts & servers were very friendly and attentive.
The small plates and sides were delicious. Highlights were the eggs w salmon roe and beets.
The not so good:
Service was not paced and we felt mildly rushed. Not a slow relaxed experience, but they didn’t kick us out of the table.
The sommelier wasn’t very helpful and did not come across as knowledgeable.
The steak was tough and overcooked.
Overall, it was good enough that I would give it another shot.
The service and care that the maître D gave me was above and beyond. I had had some car trouble needed some food to go, even though the restaurant doesn't supply to go orders typically. But they rallied and helped us out with a smile and generosity, and I'm very grateful the food was superb.
I measure French bistros by one restaurant, Seattle's Le Pichet. Sorry, L'Eschelle, you didn't stand up to that standard.
Amazing service. Great drinks. No reservations available, walk in only. Waited 45mins on a Friday at 6PM. Service was quick and attentive. We got the oysters, steak, duck breast, and rapini. Flavors were fantastic, especially the duck breast which I highly recommend. Steak and duck breast were cooked perfectly and delicious. However, I would not order the steak again because it honestly was not a complete dish. It was just the steak, sauce with green peppercorns. For $43 8oz steak, I personally feel like it should be served w some small side to complete the dish, not just steak and sauce. If you plan on ordering the steak, make sure to get a side otherwise you’ll leave hungry. Otherwise, everything great. I will be back again to try the pork!

We ate every bite of every dish we ordered. Everything was perfect!
Great walk in and not need week of reservations like those bouji Lorange place but foods are quite average
Frisee Lyionnase so so
Duck cooked medium rare great bur has too much soy sauce and it tastes like duck I had in China town.
Our waitress was very nice, and the service was good, but I was disappointed they did not have the french onion soup they had advertised on their instagram. It was the main reason I wanted to try this place.
Oh man. Talk about a tremendous meal. I starved myself all day in anticipation of coming to L'Echelle, and it exceeded any and all expectations. Our server coursed out our selections from the menu carefully; the small bistro prevented all the dishes from being deposited at once, which meant that we were able to savor and contemplate each dish as it deserved. Portland is full of amazing restaurants with dedicated teams, and it's palpable that this place's beating heart is not corporate backing, but mission and legacy.
As someone in the wine industry, I can attest that the menu is carefully curated with deliciousness at all price points, and I was delighted to find some true rarities for special celebrations.
We'll be back, time and time again, after this first taste.
The crudo and panisse were superb. The duck was perfectly cooked and delicious. We didn't dive into the wine menu but the cocktails and beer list were unique and paired well with the meal. Can't wait to go back to try more things!
