Lovely place, lovely people & service, and great food. Loved the steak tartare and egg salad sandwich.
Great food! Wonderful wine!!
Even better Service!!!
Superb in every, single way imaginable. The team, the ambience, everything is confident, beautiful, creative and efficient. Perfect execution. A diamond in the rough in Portland. I would place this alongside Le Pigeon & Coquine as “must visits” dining destinations in Portland.
Food: the food tastes pretty good, but the portion sizes were small for the price. $7 for five thin slices of baguette, $26 for one slice of smorbord, $23 for a small slice of quiche and $28 for a dozen-ish mussels. We definitely left hungry.
Service: very very very slow. Definitely not a place to go if you’re looking to eat in a reasonable time. We arrived at 11AM and were seated quickly. After taking our order, it took 30min to get bread, then 30min to get the smorbrod, then another 20min to get steamed mussels and quiche.
Overall just an okay experience. Not a come backer for us.
Another WOW for food in Portland! I’m convinced food on the west coast is better than the NYC food scene! Yikes! But so true! Better ingredients, amazing service and love the minimalistic and detail oriented decor. Maurice’s was off the charts - amazing food, perfect portions and excellent wine pairing options. Had an amazing lunch!!! Would come here again AND recommend to friends. You can’t go wrong!
“A refuge, a moment out of time.” Where you slow down, and enjoy each dish made to order.
The quiche here was a different animal - so soft the filling almost oozed out of the flaky crust. And the razor clams were divine! It was so full of umami and reminded me of the Chinese mitten crab. I already long to be back for the clams (and everything else). Plus great dessert.
Fantastic food, wine and service. Sorry it took me so long to find this gem. Will definitely be back.
My favorite brunch place of all time. Everything about this place is what we need more of.
Amazing place! The food is delicious and service immaculate.
What a unique dining experience! The owner and head chef greeted us as we were looking at the menu on the door. We had to come in! She was so friendly and willing to talk. You can tell she really values her guests. The food was all fabulous, with the best French onion soup I’ve had (it’s their seasonal soup right now), and then a fabulous lemon Soufflé and chocolate cinnamon cookie that I was NOT expecting to taste like that. The host made conversation with us and I will be sure to remember that as well. The place is so cute and chic as well. I felt very welcome. So glad I stopped in!
Restaurantji Recommends
This has got to be the coolest and most unique lunch spot in Portland. Really feels like a passion project. Bright atmosphere, even on a rainy day. Highly recommend.
👎 There are too many excellent restaurants in Portland to settle for such inattentive and patently rude service at this one.
While we were being ignored for a long time ahead of even placing our lunch order, we watched the servers tend to high-priority matters such as wrapping silverware. It was absurdly difficult even to catch someone’s eye.
After finally politely flagging someone down, ordering, and being told our food would be served to us *as it came ready*… not even simple bread or a salad had emerged over half an hour later. When we then asked about the wait, we were told food would be out soon. (Nobody ever checked on us in any way here – any attention we got the entire time we apparently had to grovel for.)
We waited *another* 20 minutes before asking about food again. We were treated with impressive rudeness by the chef herself, who welcomed us to “get a refund.” Well, we had received nothing besides water for over an hour since arriving, so a refund wasn’t necessary.
I used to like this place but will never go again. We are avid local-business patrons who love to love our restaurants and the people who work there. We did not deserve the relentlessly bad service followed by total lack of ownership that even the proprietor herself embodied here. 👎
The food was delicious. My favorite was the winter salad as the cabbage was fresh, crisp and dressed well. Another great dish was the black pepper cheesecake. Looked stunning and tasted wonderful (much lighter than a NY cheesecake and more moist than a Japanese cheesecake).
The restaurant was beautiful as well as small. Made for a cozy meal. The folks working there were friendly, kind and hospitable.
This is a very small place with one chef but definitely worth coming. It's a small menu of well-executed dishes. Had the lentil soup which was not heavy with a very good homemade chicken broth. Ordered some baguette and butter (room temperature butter, would have preferred the baguette heated a bit) radishes with butter (mild radishes with delicious salted butter) and the quiche. Wow that quiche! The egg filling was like a delicious soft custard. Accompanied by some wilted greens That were very good. So a light lunch for the 2 of us. The prices are not inexpensive but the quality of the food is very high. And kudos to the staff for getting us through quickly as we at a 2pm curtain at PSC.
Fantastic thoughtful food served in a unique setting. I wish Maurice had more seats!
