The food is excellent and what you would find in New Mexico. There's not much seating, so I suggest getting it to go.

Classic Portland hole in the wall cafe. We had breakfast burritos made with their own tortillas. Best ever. Good coffee and friendly atmosphere. Prices are nice, too.

Came here on the last day of summer, so I actually got to sit outside.I had the primo taco ? (the one with pastrami)It was fantastic, as was Alyssa (sp?) who took my order. She was so wonderful-I really enjoyed chatting with her and swapping recipes.A real Portland experience all the way around! And the price was right for one person for breakfast ?

I grew up in New Mexico and have been coming to this restaurant for the past 5.5 years. Their chile is spot on, so are the sopapillas, and tortillas! Whenever I am homesick - I come here.

We visited Pepper Box Cafe around 10 am. on a Sunday. There were maybe 3 tables available. However, right after, it got full. This is a good spot for small parties to go because it's such a tiny space, a few tables, and it has tables of 4 or less. You order your food at the counter, and then you take your number, and go to your table. I give my opinion based on my personal experience and the service I get at home (las vegas). The service could have been better, and I wish it was more genuine. It was weird to me that you have to bus your own tables when it asks you for a tip as soon as you order your food. The food was good! I ordered a Standard with Carne Adobada, and we also ordered The Original with no salsa. The Stabdard Adobada was a pretty large portion, enough to share between two people. I wish they would have given 2 Tortillas instead of one, which just did not feel like enough for the amount served. The carne Adobada was pretty good. It had a great flavor but was just not authentic to me. The eggs definitely taste homemade, and the beans had great flavor. The original is basically like a breakfast taco. It hit the spot. It was a pretty large taco that included egg, cheese, meat protein if you like, and salsa. I really enjoy the taste and consistency of the tortillas. They sell glass bottle drinks or bottled juice. Atmosphere felt like I was going to my aunts house to eat, but just more modern. I spent $34 for the 2 plates and 3 drinks. Overall, to me, it was a good spot for a quick bite to eat. Would consider coming back.

This is the best kept breakfast secret in Portland. I've been coming here for years, and even when it gets busy, a line out the door would only take about 10 minutes. The food is New Mexico cuisine. Burritos and tacos smothered in green or red or Christmas chili sauce, stuff it with their house made chorizo or adovada, slow roasted pork. Add a little house made habanero hot sauce and KaPOW!! They also have a few other staples, but I found my dish and been eating the same thing 2 to 3 times a week for the last several years. If you come often enough, Alyssa will know your name, your order and you might even get your receipt folded into an origami pepper and put on the wall.Breakfast all day, open 9-2. Go get some.

I'm from Austin, gateway to the Southwest. We have breakfast tacos. Amazing ones. No, Portlanders, not breakfast burritos. Tacos. The benefit? You can have more flavors and a smaller package and try different things without committing to a burrito sized choice. This place was very Austin or New Mexico in a good way. Got 2 tacos. Chile was good. Will be back!

This place sparked my green chile addiction many years ago and it’s been a mandatory Portland stop ever since. Strong black coffee and house-made habo sauce to boot, what more could you ask for?

Heuvos Rancheros with over easy eggs and the green chili sauce was amazing.

Food wasn't very good... you have to order, sit down, food brought to you. The people were nice & pleasant but not what I'd consider worth going back for in a city with Great food.

I love this place, I come here almost every time I’m in Portland. The original breakfast taco might be the best breakfast taco I’ve ever had and I’m from Texas. I also like the decor, it feels very authentically New Mexico. And the drip coffee is always good!

I spent a lot of time growing up in NM where you could get green chili cheeseburgers from the local McDonald's and a&w. Even Colorado gets down with hatch. This place is like a step back through time to some of the best spots I would frequently inhale. The perfect adobada n cheddar melted with potatoes is exactly what I miss. The potatoes could be more crunchy and the chili could be more spicy. I would say the price could be cheaper, but the tacos were huge and I've only seen this kinda food in NM and CO.. Awesome.

I don’t understand why this place is so popular… the smell of mold was so strong I was gagging. This can’t be healthy for the employees to breathe in spores all day. The layout is baffling… and overall just looks very dingy and sadThe food came out slow but tasted alright, my fave was the tortillas.

I'm not from NM but did live and work there (at a restaurant) for a period of time. Pepperbox Cafe is serving up plates consistent with what I would expect. Chile was flavorful. Menu friendly to gf/vegetarian. I loved the original tacos Xmas style. Soooo needed those in my life today.
