Thoroughly enjoyed my first experience at Side Street last night! My boyfriend and I came in for a few hours towards the end of the night and we will definitely be back. Been looking for a spot for anyone who just wants to chill and get some drinks. Maybe play some bar games and eat sometimes. A bar that’s just a bar. Seems I may have found it. To the employee working solo last night, I was impressed by how many positions you were juggling. Probably not an easy thing for anyone but you certainly made it appear so. Clearly a true service industry professional. I saw you be a bartender, cook and dishwasher. I bet you’re also a bouncer, manager, mediator and more when the need arises.

I would give this place 0 stars if it was an option. Stopped in for a beer with my boyfriend and left genuinely stunned by the rudeness and hostility of the bartender. From the moment we walked in, it felt like we were inconveniencing her. No smile. Just an immediate attitude like we were a burden.
The bar sells craft beer, so we politely asked for a sample before ordering, a completely normal thing to do at any bar like this. She responded with visible annoyance and attitude like we were asking her to split an atom. I actually said to my boyfriend that the vibe was off, but we brushed it off and placed an order for two drinks.
We went to pay with Apple Pay, standard, right? It’s 2025. She said we needed a physical bank card to pay, we explained that we didn’t have a physical card. In a patronising tone she said ‘You don’t have your wallet?’. When we explained we only had Apple Pay, she replied, ‘You need to carry your cards’.
We politely apologised, we hadn’t seen any signs stating no digital payments. At this point, instead of offering a solution or showing any ounce of professionalism, she grabbed the beers back and said ‘Don’t waste my time.’
I have never in my life been refused phone payment, let alone publicly humiliated for it. My boyfriend has spent months in Portland and has never encountered anything remotely close to this kind of treatment.
In an industry where service is everything, this was a masterclass in how not to treat people. From reading some of the other low reviews it’s clear that there is an issue with this member of staff.

I live just around the corner from Side Street, and I'm so happy I do! It is the most warm, comfortable bar to hang out in, roomy, friendly staff, and the pool table is nearly always open. In the winter time, they have heaters on the street - huge plus. It's great!
In a city that makes fabulous pizza, I don’t understand how Side Street isn’t written about more, because it’s awesome. We did a pizza tour with an out-of-town friend and hit some famous spots, and this was still the favorite. It’s not trying to be anything — it’s just GOOD ASS PIZZA with crispy crust, the right amount of toppings and great flavor. Get yourself here and tell your friends, cause they deserve some pizza cred!

Great neighborhood bar. Good pizza and friendly bartenders. Mostly frequented by locals from the neighborhood, but very welcoming to everyone. If you come here with a friendliness and positive attitude you’ll likely make new friends. Owner is very responsive to feedback.

We had a fine time here yesterday. Warm and inviting pub with friendly bartender. Cocktails and bar snacks were tasty and affordable. And a pool table! A great joint for a lazy session.
