We thought we'd try somewhere new but we regret it!! The live music was very good and the service was okay. The food was downright bad. They brought the wrong sides for both of us. Everything was SO salty. I got the fried chicken and expected at least a couple pieces of meat but got only one. Sadly that was the only decent part of the meal. The cheesy potatoes were extremely salty and otherwise flavorless, the Mac and cheese was grainy and bland and the corn bread was cold and dense. Jiffy is better! My partner had brisket and pulled pork that was so salty he couldn't eat it. It also didn't look like the menu photo at all -- no bread or pickles on the plate. I rarely leave anything on my plate but this food was inedible.I also ordered a "southern punch" cocktail that I'm not convinced had any bourbon in it. I couldn't even drink it. It was so overly fake and sweet.Overall a huge letdown and extremely overpriced for the quality and quantity of food. Especially considering we hardly ate any of it.
Came for a birthday dinner and generally enjoy it. Just was quite difficult to order when nearly half of the meats were sold out... which didn't leave us with too many options. There were also drinks on the cocktail menu that simply couldn't be made due to a lack of ingredients. The menu was also a bit confusing, especially where the Platters are listed. That said, it seems like a nice place and willing to give it the benefit if the doubt - hence the four stars.Realistically, it was much more like 3 star showing. Thank goodness I was with good company ?The food (that we ended up being able to get) was indeed good, though, and the staff as kind! So no major complaints there. If anything, just try and make sure to go earlier (if possible) so that you at least have more BBQ meat selections.
Food quality is very low. My food was about the saltiest thing I have ever eaten. The price to portion made no sense, quite expensive for what you get. The cornbread was burnt. My wife's salad had some very brown lettuce on it. Service is super slow, one person doing all the work, the other two are moping around, this makes it slow. The poor person that works with these lazy co-workers, should work somewhere else where they have good teammates.
Only had apps and drinks but both were good. Decent prices. Good service. Server was quick to fix an issue with our order. Prices are good. Live music was entertaining , a bit loud given the restaurant was half full, but fun nonetheless. Parking is a pain.
Nice place to eat and have a drink. Staff were very friendly.
This place used to have more than decent food. I'd enjoyed it for years. But they changed their recipe on a number of items and now it's not nearly as good. Everything now has way too much salt. Also, their portions are smaller, and the prices went up. Finally, their online posted hours do not matter; they close when they feel like it. I tried to get to-go service 15 minutes before they were supposed to be closed, and the manager was extremely apathetic that I was trying to hold them to their own standards. It's as if the whole place is trying to shutter. Oh well. Thanks for the good memories; it was fun while it lasted.
Don't get takeout. They told us 15 minutes on the phone, then "another 15-20" when we got there in person. The food took an hour and a half, and we only ordered sides and starters! The food itself was alright but not amazing, Portland has at least 2 better southern places I've been to. Ironically the cornbread seemed like it'd been sitting a long time. Food quality certainly not worth them lying right to our faces about how long it would take.
I should have known by the low number of patrons for Sunday brunch but I tried it anyway. Service by Chancellor was very lackluster and left us without a server for long periods of time. The barbecue here is mediocre at best and although it claims to be applewood smoked it tasted of propane and creosote. The pulled pork was alternately it layers of that and dried out meat that was hard to swallow. The brisket was like wise fatty and it not been cooked in such a way to render that fat to an edible consistency. The ribs were dry. The one bright spot was the keilbasa sausage which was quite tasty. We tried a bloody mary flight which came with no garnish and was quite disappointing. They do have quite a large variety of whiskey and if that is what you're after I'm sure it's a nice place to stop but, if you are looking for good food, continue searching. The attached photo was a $40 plate of barbecue and look more like something I would get at the fair for $18.
I was so disappointed in my entire experience. I have waited 3 weeks to come here after being told about the bloody Mary’s which were terrible. My meal (a salad with pulled pork) was mediocre to say the least. I paid $5 for the pork because they were out of the chicken and shrimp. The pork came out in a pile on top of my salad and was nothing but a fatty blob. Then when I mentioned to my server that I was unhappy he said ohhhh and walked by and never came back until he was giving us the check. The first three things we ordered they were out of. The server Chancellor was dress in sweat pants and scummy tee shirt and looked like he had just rolled out of bed. I will never be back and I will never recommend this place to anyone.
We had SUCH AN AWESOME experience here! We were with a group of 7 and Marissa was our server. She had stellar customer service! She asked a gentlemen to move, so she could accommodate our group. He was more than happy to do so, and followed up with incredible smiles and outstanding service. She really made the experience for us so amazing! Our group came back for drinks multiple times because of this. The food was impressive to boot, I had a salad with pulled pork and it just about perfect. Not too salty, and full of flavor!! We will be back!! THANKS MARISSA!

Pretty disappointing. Food was meh, and knowledge of waiters regarding whiskeys was suspect at best. Significant bar stock problems left them short of good whiskeys, and I’m not 100% convinced what was ordered was what was served. Alternative downtown is Swine Moonshine and Whiskey Bar. The guys there are whiskey experts.
Southland Whiskey is a good spot for BBQ. The pulled pork is very tasty. We had it on the smothered fries, which also came with delicious coleslaw, bbq sauce & pickles. The roasted artichoke was odd but flavorful. You get two huge whole artichokes. For our main course we had the Nashville chicken tenders and waffle (the waffle was a $4 add on & you only got half a waffle, which was not $4 good). The chicken was cooked perfectly. Unfortunately the rest of the dish was nothing special. We also had the Bourbon roasted salmon. This was a delicious entree! The salmon was amazing, the garlic mashed potatoes were great, & the roasted brussel sprouts were also very tasty!I'll be back to try more of the BBQ meats and sides!
I was awfully disappointed by the entire experience at Southland. Came for a double bday dinner for our nieces, one is extremely picky so I sent her their online menu in advance to see if she would be happy with this choices— only to arrive and the menu is completely different! My adult niece ended up ordering off the children’s menu.Speaking of kids, we had reservations for 8 people, 3 happen to be children. When we arrived they LOUDLY proclaimed that Bc of the children they would have to make us sit in a location that wasn’t what they’ve already set up— they then forced a table of adults to MOVE to a new table at the front of the restaurant so we could be in the back— and then 2 of them were caught by me and 2 others of our party talking terrible things about ‘all the children that will be there’ and how ‘horrible and loud they were sure the would be’ in the hallway by the bathroom. They had no idea we were standing behind them waiting for the restroom, as they made these insanely rude and tasteless assumptions of the children who had yet to arrive. They were extremely standoffish and provided lackluster service.
Nice food and drinks!Food could be a bit warmer and potatoes and Mac n cheese could use more cheese sauce.Service was fast and attentive. The atmosphere is also charming and cozy. Closing hours seem to be variable though so check ahead of time.
Can't believe I haven't been here before ???We had the salmon board and cornbread appetizers, I had the fried chicken and my husband had smoked brisket and pulled pork with coleslaw and augratin potato sides.Everything was perfectly prepared and so delicious, simply put it's mouthwatering!!Extra kudos if you know how they pickle their green beans... and can tell me!!! Because I could eat about a million of those tasty little beans every day!! Such good food, we'll definitely be going back for more!!
