We arrived early for a show. This was a convenient walk for a couple people to drop in for a bite and a drink. Nice ambience.

I would have ranked the overall experience higher, however our server was awful. We had to flag him down several times to order drinks, remind him of a drink order he never placed for our friend, get water - he rarely came to check on us. Meanwhile, the tables around us who had different servers were getting what appeared exemplary service, their food and drinks arrived in a decent time, and they had someone checking in on them in an appropriate amount of time.

Had a great meal! Service was outstanding (thanks Ben!!) and the food was amazing. Even with a fairly short menu, everyone was very happy with their choices. The restaurant was packed (just before a show at the Schnitz) and we still got our drinks and food very quickly. Everyone we engaged with knew every item on the menu and made great recommendations. We will be back soon!

Comfortable place serving some good dishes with quality ingredients and a great local Wine selection. Service from the Barman was very friendly and attentive.

Our server was slow to come to our table. He mixed up our order for appetizer, and brought the wrong item. Due to time constraints, we accepted the wrong appetizer. The service was not great. Our food items were expensive, as most items are now, and they were acceptable, not noteworthy. All that said, I loved the convenience of having a restaurant in the Heathman when attending an event at the Schnitz. I hope they can step up their service training. I also hope they can keep trying to expand the menu and provide a more extraordinary dining experience. All said, the location is wonderful, the Tavern needs to step it up for both service and menu options for such a crucial location.

Been there several times for dinner because it is conveniently next to the concert hall. Each time we paid too much for a creative menu that was poorly executed and walked away disappointed. Service and location are nice, but we will be trying other restaurants in the future.

Had an incredible dinner at The Tavern at Heathman last night before a lecture at one of the nearby theaters. The host and the server were both friendly, helpful, and prompt. The food was outstanding; I had an appetizer, one of the specials for my main, plus a dessert with chamomile tea. The ambiance was quiet (although there were many other diners) which was just what I wanted. Visitors to Portland should definitely try it, but so should folks who live nearby. It is a great restaurant for a great meal.

The menu is limited and could use revising. Many of us are going to the symphony or to a program at the Winningstad Theater and we'd appreciate a larger selection of small plates.

We arrived for 6:15 reservation and made sure they knew we were going to an 8 pm show. We didn't even have our salads by 7:25 so we paid for our drinks (that we got a half hour apart) and left. Very disheartening for what was supposed to be a special occasion, no dinner.

The food tasted very good, but my serving of steak was rather skimpy -- just a few small slices. Loved the parm fries, and the salad with grapes was fantastic. As for the dining room, improvements are needed. People shouldn't be crowded near the bar, which is also near the entrance. It makes it hard for the servers to get back & forth and for patrons to get to their tables, etc. Instead, tell people who want drinks that they can go sit in the library and will be served in there! Also, it took forever for me to get my Whiskey Old Fashioned, and the timing of the salad serving was off. However, our waiter was very nice & very fair, comping me my cocktail and the salad because of the delay. I think with some tweaks this could be a fine place!

Decided to have valentines dinner here, menu looked delicious with lots of options great cocktail selection too.. we double dated with another couple while making reservations there were options for the "valentines experience " with a 4 course dinner $70 per person , or regular reservations with out the special vday menu.(just the regular menu) I booked a regular reservation for the 4 of us 8 pm also noted the "dress code" and valet parking. Thought the restaurant would be busy since we couldn't get a reservation til 8 pm but no big deal. We arrived early, no valet, no biggie parked 5 blocks away walked to the restaurant and were greeted right away. The restaurant was nice, great ambiance. I'd say maybe 8 tables had people at them I thought that was kind of odd since day of had 0 reservations available. ( I know some restaurants do this to preserve quality service and to not overwhelm the wait staff and kitchen) The Host who greeted us was less than happy to greet us passed us off to another host who was sweet and welcoming to us we were seated right away, and given the " valentines experience menu" our waiter came quickly I asked for the regular menu and he advised us they were only offering the valentine experience menu. I was instantly disappointed and immediately thought we should forget dinner there just have the drinks we had already ordered. We talked it over with our friends decided to stay give it a try the place has great food reviews right? Our waiter came back with our drinks and offered to sub our oysters with 1 bread roll. Really sub oysters for a roll? That's like trading steak for refried beans in my opinion. Whatever we're pretty hungry at this point . (Btw our waiter had the personality of a wet sponge) he brought out the tiniest sour dough roll I was like is this a joke? It was really good though. Nice salty crunchy crust served with a honey butter on the side. Braised celery root with fondue and a green salad with crab were our 2nd course choice. The salad was pretty good, celery root was terrible the entire bottom burnt and it was hard in the middle it was even hard to cut through with a knife hardly any fondue and we sent it back. Asked for another sour dough roll, our first one must have been the last one because "they ran out". Our friend had soup which was served with no spoon. 2nd round of drinks were ordered which seamed to be an inconvenience for our waiter. Then I notice a couple had been seated a few tables away wearing jeans and hoodie I thought thought they had a pretty strict dress code ? Not mad or anything but just made me kind of think hmmm? Then I see them get served their dinner... burgers and fries!!!!???? We asked our waiter about it since he told us the only menu available was the Valentine's Day menu. He explained they had ordered from the bar. Why was that not offered when we inquired about the menu choices!?!? And we were like 30 feet from the bar. Also the bar doesn't stock pineapple juice!? What bar doesn't? The waitress helping the table with the burger orders seamed much friendlier than ours so we asked her about it. She let us know those guests were actually employees and having their shift meal. Ok that makes more sense but why did our waiter say it was from the bar? 3rd course I had the steal head everyone else had steak Diane mine was good nothing to rave about but was cooked well and good seasoning steak Diane had amazing flavor but all 3 were cold! At this point our waiter was MIA . We asked the other tables waitress for the manager she came out we let her know steaks were cold she explained she pulled them straight off the grill herself and served them she offered to re fire them we declined at this point we were over it and explained over all things we're just a disappointment from the beginning. She touched on the burger situation says that that table had their food brought in by the hotel so at this point we now have 3 different stories (weird!?) she did take 2 of the steaks off our bi

Made a reservation on Open Table a couple of weeks before the arrival date. When we arrived the menu was price fix and not what was on the their website site when I made the reservation. There was no notice of that during the reservation process. We had tickets for the symphony and it was Valentine's Day and to,late to go restaurant hunting so we stayed. The wait staff was very good but unfortunately the negative reviews we saw were accurate as to the food. If the food met the price of the meal I wouldn't complain but I agree with my wife who said the best part of the meal was the ice cream. It's too bad I had really like this restaurant years before but now I just wish them well.

Second time here. First time at a prix fixe menu event that was amazing. Each dish packed with flavor. Loved it enough that my daughter and I went back for a pre-theater dinner. We shared steak frites, a wonderful vegetarian pot pie, and meatballs. The food is delicious--sourced locally when possible, and the atmosphere is luxurious yet comfortable. I'd like to try the Charred Octopus in the Library next time. Highly recommend.

I love the Tavern at the Heathman, but last night it was “chaos” as our waiter noted when 40 minutes after we were seated no food had arrived. I guess he finally noticed and asked he could bring more wine. We didn't need more wine. We asked for some bread to tide us over and he brought that, so we survived waiting another 15 minutes for our dinners. I had purposely made the reservation a little earlier than I would have so that we could arrive at the concert at a comfortable time. In the end we did just that, our waiter heard us when we voiced our concern at the tardy arrival of our dinners. So whew, we will go back.

The service was wonderful starting with the front desk and including every server, always willing to serve in a friendly, accommodating, professional manner. The food did not meet my exectations. Salmon was tasteless, meatballs underdone. Stingy on the sauces which might have made the meat dishes taste better? The location is so perfect, in the wonderful Heathman and next to the Schnitzer. I will give it another try for the positive reasons above and hope the food is better.
