Vertical Diner and The Gold Room

I’ve been there twice and both times I was very happy with the meal and the service. Everyone is so nice. The gravy was incredible. The way the tigers and tempeh bacon are prepared was tasty and nothing I’ve tasted before. Can’t wait until my next trip! Updated from previous review on 2026-03-08

Fun 70s diner vibes and great vegan food. Had the Joaquin Phoenix burger with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy which was delicious. The shakes were amazing! I'm definitely going back for breakfast.

I just ate at Vertical Diner today and it was excellent. It’s an all-vegan diner with a really solid menu selection, and everything I tried was genuinely delicious.

The portions were generous, the food came out quickly, and the pricing felt very fair for the quality and amount of food. Our waitress was extremely kind and attentive, which made the whole experience even better.

The space itself is really cool too. It has that classic old-school diner feel with big windows and globe lighting that makes it comfortable and inviting.

Great food, great service, great atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Great breakfast spot! Our food was delicious, the coffee was great and our server was very friendly. Vegan breakfast available all day and they also offer burgers, sandwich and salads. We will be back soon!

I now understand why the reviews for Vertical Diner and The Gold Room are low. I came here for breakfast, and the server seemed uninterested in taking my order and appeared uncomfortable with me and my partner being from different nationalities. The coffee was poorly prepared and served cold, and the sausage was undercooked, which raised concerns about basic food safety.

Overall, the experience felt unwelcoming, the food was not properly made, and the customer service was disappointing. I would not recommend supporting this diner, especially when there are many other places that offer better service, properly prepared food, and a more inclusive atmosphere.

Had a large reservation here recently for a birthday event and it was a very pleasant experience. The staff were extremely helpful in figuring out payment, were super accommodating, and made sure we all had a great experience. Appetizers for the table came by pretty quickly.

I've also been here a couple times in the past and really love the diner. The hot chocolate is AMAZING with whipped cream, and all the salad are so filling and tasty. Thank you for a wonderful experience! Greatly recommend Vertical Diner!

The waitress was fantastic and although we aren't vegan she went out of her way to explain the different dishes. We were short on time so went for the pancakes and they were delicious.

I’m so glad to have a expert service technician like angee who can get me a slice of carrot cake with extra frosting all the while having a positive attitude with a huge smile just made my day

Best vegan food on the i-5 corridor! Cute diner with the kindest folks working there. We stopped by for takeout and while my kiddos explored the booths and gorgeous gold room, we found some merch! Then later 50miles down the road when we got hungry, we dug into the BEST salad I’ve had all year (Thai salad with tempeh bacun- aka crack) and delightful fries + California burrito. I’m sure it would be even better fresh out of the kitchen, but the to-go food was incredible! We will be back!

Great option for vegan diner fare. Expansive menu and the food always tastes fresh. Can’t go wrong with the breakfast or the buffalo tigers! They also have some take home patties that are tasty and affordable. My only suggestion would be that the decor could use an update, although it has a retro vibe to it.

I enjoy this place. I love that its always easy to find parking, its old style diner interior and architecture and the whole menu is plant based/ vegan. The food is decent but the prices are somewhat on the higher side. I do like that you can create your own breakfast combo and choose whatever you want. You can swap out anything in any of the breakfast combos too. They have lots of options that kids love as well.

I used to love this place but lately they’ve really been going down hill. I keep getting stuff undercooked or completely forgotten. I ordered french toast to go and they forgot the syrup and the milk shake without any explanation which they’re still trying to charge me for. Definitely not ordering here again for a while.

I got the California Burrito and although the flavor was pretty decent, it was absurdly small (see photo). I can almost guarantee that your smart phone is longer than this burrito, and your smart phone should not be longer than a burrito from a restaurant. For reference, it was not much bigger than a small frozen burrito you can buy at the grocery store for like $4. Yes, it had a side of fries, but Jesus Christ, $17 for this tiny thing?! Any other vegan burrito that I've had around Portland is so big it's basically two meals. This one? Half a meal and now I'm typing this while hungry. Will not be back. What a bummer.
