We were staying in Rockaway for some work and decided to walk down here to grab some breakfast 9/2 because it was 2 blocks from our beach house. We have a 5 and 6 year old who reallyyyyy wanted pancakes and a 4 month old. As we walked in the door whoever was working told us we could not have our stroller in there and that we could look at the menu outside. I am a server and I would NEVER tell someone with a baby they had to get out of our establishment. We asked if we could order to go food and he said outside. I have the menu back and said we won’t be eating here thank you. Then as we tried to leave they scoffed at us and said “it’s a fire hazard” yeah well you can explain things nicer and not be rude. It’s a tourist city and people with kids have strollers. Put a sign on the door or something! So we went to the deli next door and had chicken strips and taquitos for breakfast. It was just one of the rudest encounters I have ever had and to be with a baby and basically kicked out of here was so embarrassing as everyone eating just stared at us.. Do better! We prolly won’t ever be back unfortunately and we love Rockaway. Good thing there is a better bakery right down the street

A fun stop on our way south. Great breakfast that was served hot. Preferred by locals so been around a long time. All the standard fare served well and a good price. Decent parking and good coffee

Food was amazing. Pancakes are massive. Friendly staff, but small dinning area.

Older lady waitress was incredibly rude to us the entire time from the moment we got there, including rolling her eyes, huffing, slamming our cups down on the table, glaring at us, etc, then spent time sitting at the booth behind us sorting silverware and whining loudly about how she hated her job and her coworker was mean for giving her stuff to do and how she wanted to go home, etc. it was very annoying to listen to.
Additionally, the “hot chocolate” was room temperature at best, and I got the French toast with sausage and eggs, and ended up with food poisoning from it. Would NOT recommend going here.

We went to grumpys despite negative reviews and were happily surprised! The fiid was amazing and while some of what the negative reviews say is accurate like long wait time for food and straight to the point service (which can be perceived as grumpy) these reviewers need to change there perception. We had a 15-20 minute wait for a table which was extremely reasonable considering the size of restaurant and staff, after ordering we did wait about an hour for food which was perfect for us to enjoy our coffee and company and was also reasonable considering the amount of tables, cooks, and that the kitchen probably got stacked with tickets. We were so amazingly surprised with how delicious the food was and the insanely large portions for the price we paid. On top of everything our waiter was great, attentive, and timely even though he was so busy.
Grumpys was the best start we could've had for our day and we would definitely go again. I would strongly recommend it if you are looking for a delicious mom and pop dive diner and you got some time to kill!

Grumpys has such a sweet, old-school vibe, and the owners themselves seem wholesome and genuine. I thought it was really charming that the female owner actually sits down at your table to take your order, and the menu has all the classic diner favorites.
That said, I have to share that this isn’t a place I’d recommend bringing children. I saw other people having meals with young children , and while the kids in the diner were just being their happy, normal selves — not disruptive or loud — I witnessed staff repeatedly telling them to quiet down, in a way that felt unkind. It left me with a bad taste in my mouth, especially because everything else about the place was so nostalgic and inviting.
If you’re going with adults, I think you’ll probably enjoy the classic diner experience. But as a parent, I can’t recommend it for families with little ones, which is a shame given that they offer a kids menu.

Food is soggy, and does not taste good, fries are mush, barely any clam strips in my platter, no shrimp in my platter, asked for crispy bacon, got limp soft bacon. Peppers and onions are raw on my Philly. Staff is kind but food did not turn out good. Oh and the cinnamon rolls don’t taste very good… $250 for 9 of us. Unfortunately, we won’t be back….
