My wife and I stayed here and as middle point between la grande and baker city. Price point was great. Staff was kind, dogs were sweet, and so much history in this place. As noted it’s NOT the Ritz, and that’s okay. The room was clean, the bed was a bit worn but comfy enough, Although noisy. The town is charming and we were able to unwind and relax. Will be back.
Absolutely loved staying here. Owner was the absolute sweetest, and to be greeted by a sheep dog named Rosie? What more could you possibly want. In addition to the extremely rich history of this place we found it to be clean, relaxing, and the perfect place to stop off for a night and enjoy some quality time without the distractions of modern technology. We’ll absolutely be back to explore the other rooms which each have their own characters charms. 10/10 experience.
To everyone not leaving a 5⭐️ review—you might just have too high of expectations.
This hotel is an antique! Of course it’s not going to be your standard, modern experience, especially when it comes to things like elevators and accessibility.
But is it absolutely beautiful? Yes.
It has a “choose your own adventure” and “help yourself” kind of vibe. If you’re particular or expecting Hilton-level amenities, maybe stay at a Hilton. But if you’re looking for a comfy bed, a clawfoot bathtub, and a place with real character—this is it.
Each room is unique and beautiful in its own way. It was so refreshing to unplug—no TVs in the rooms, minimal tech—just a peaceful, quiet stay in a big, gorgeous space. And fun fact: Annie Oakley stayed here!
To top it all off, the owner is incredibly kind, and his dog Rosie is quite literally the cutest.
10/10—we’ll definitely be back.
Step off the interstate and step back in time to a farming community of 1910. This building has kept the charm of marble floors and push button light switches with the convenience of a recently installed elevator. Rosie the sheepdog was our first greeter as we entered and greeted us for coffee this morning. The themed rooms are full of authentic western artifacts. The hotel and grounds are well-maintained and inviting. Take time to explore the town by following the walking tour map and explore the many paintings and historical documents on the hotel walls.
Awesome place to stay over 100 year's old all original woodwork sheep dog named Rosie will greet you when you arrive if you are in union oregon I suggest staying there
Loved this place! So cool and historic. You will never stay anywhere with so much character and uniqueness. My kids also absolutely loved it!
It's not a squeaky clean Ritz Carlton. So if that's what you're wanting, you should go to the Ritz Carlton. However, if you're wanting to have a cool experience and memory for you family, this is it! You're thrown back in time the minute you step on the sidewalk.
Everyone should stay here at least once! It's worth getting off of the interstate just to stay here. This place is unforgettable!
My only complaint is that we didn't have more time there!
if you want your things stolen then this is the place for you, step inside where the own is a mess & treats ya as a dummy he is. lie to a cop if the cop actually stopped by as lies are what the union & Lagrange cops do best surely not their jobs.... so again if you like being stolen from this is the place to go... OH & KEEP DELIVERING MY REVIEW I WILL KEEP POSTING THEFT.
Great area if you like small cities. We do. The people we met were very nice. We went to a small Baptist church for Sunday service and were welcomed in. It was a great service. The owner of the hotel is very nice. His dog Rosie was great. She would greet us each day.Rooms: The room was not very clean. It really needed a good vacuum and dusting.Bathroom was clean and the bed sheets were clean. No room service. Coffee was served in a room downstairs. The restaurant is closed.

New elevator is Great!
Poor experience. Pictures are not accurate. The check in counter and “restaurant “ are filled with clutter. My bathtub wasn’t clean so I asked for cleaner and a sponge which I was provided. He told me the housekeepers are young and new. When I returned the cleaner the owner told me he called and fired both his housekeepers. I asked him why he would do that the rest of the room is fine! I told him they just need some training and supervision. He was extremely upset and said he just can’t deal with it and shouldn’t have to. He said he was closing down the hotel and walked off. I had no intention of posting this but he treated me poorly as well as his employees.

This is a unclean place and staff are rude
We like to stay at historic hotels especially small ones off the beaten path. The Union hotel has been on our list for a while. This place comes across to me as a once grand hotel that was renovated years ago and then allowed to decline. There appears to be another round of renovations going on now, but judging by the age of some of the debris piles around the property, it is going very slowly or possibly not progressing at all. Our room was renovated but the work was thoughtless and shoddy by my standards.Anyone who has any stability issues walking or balancing should avoid this place. No elevators. Tripping hazards, walkways obstructed, poorly installed fixtures that would easily come loose if you grabbed one for balance, and much of the first floor, as far as I could see is a cluttered hoard of knick knacks. The beautiful game room touted on the website has been closed off as the owner 's personal living room and office with Fox news playing on a gigantic TV all day.The parking in back is not really available to guests in favor of the owners cars and trailers plus most of it is used for an overgrown RV park and piles of junk and appliances from the hotel. So you'll need to park on the main road through town in front of the hotel. Which doesn't always feel safe due to rampant speeding and careless driving in town, but worked out ok for us.On the upside, it's a very cool historic building, the owner is friendly and dogs are welcome.Directly across the street is a Sinclair dino mart which is the hub of activity in town. The main entertainment seems to be for locals to burn rubber out of there in their huge trucks. If you want any sleep, bring ear plugs.

I just love staying at this unique, clean, quiet hotel! I visited for the first time 27-30 June and loved it so much I returned again last week, 18-21 July! Both times to play golf at Buffalo Peak and La Grande Country Club. Thus, I felt it only fitting to reside in the 19th Hole themed room. This place isn't your run-of-the-mill hotel. It not only has unique character because of its history and it's claw-foot tubs, beautiful carpets, tile and wood floors, and woodwork, but you're treated like family by its very kind owner Charlie and his sweet dog Rosie III. So much so, that I find it hard to leave! And the place is so peaceful being that it's located in a very safe small town with very little traffic...I thus sleep really well on their comfy beds. Hopefully, when the economy and labor market improves, Charlie can one day reopen the restaurant, but for now some good restaurants and stores are within easy walking distance.Definitely one of my favorite places to stay in all my frequent travels playing golf! Inexpensive too!

I have had such a wonderful time at the Historic Union Hotel. Every single visit has been such a pleasant and positive experience. My credit goes to the owner, Charles Morden. He is kind and funny and makes everyone feel like family. You will not find that kind of service nearly anywhere else. I wish more businesses were like this hotel. If you get the opportunity to stay there, you will really enjoy it. Not to mention the unique decorating and antiques!
