We grew up in Texas and my husband considers himself knowledgeable about the flavors and freshness of Mexican food. He ordered the two pork tamale platter and I the pork chimichangas to take out. The masa on the tamales was just the perfect thickness (not too thick or heavy) and the filling was lots of tender shredded pork. The accompanying rice and refried beans were good, he reported. My chimichangas order was one huge crispy flour tortilla stuffed with pork, rice, and seasonings. I could only eat half of it. We’ll be back.

I've eaten a ton of Mexican in my life, all over South America and Europe. I really do think this is the best I've ever had. Incredible across the board.

La Pena is my place to go in Kennett Square. Julian and his crew have been there for years and are still as good today as yesteryear. If you haven’t been, go…fast! If you haven’t been in a long time, go…fast! If you’re a frequent flyer like me, I get it! Thanks for keeping me well fed Julian and the entire La Pena staff. Muchas gracias!!

Went for lunch. Seating available. Parking too. Not fancy place. I had 2 tacos. They were $3 each. 1 chicken and 1 pork. Delicious! The other had 4 tacos. $12. Also delicious. A Side of glacamole was $5. Also very good. It’s clean. Service is friendly. 2 thumbs up. Definitely will come again next time we visit Longwood or MT Cuba Center.

The food here is so delicious! Authentic Mexican food. I had tacos with chicken and carnitas. My husband had a burrito. The meat was so tender. We will definitely return.

This restaurant seems to me about as close to down home Mexican as you can get. Delicious food, unpretentious decor, and a friendly proprietor who occasionally breaks out in song.

The owner is a fantastic person. Always greets us with a smile and handshake. We love the vegetarian tacos and burritos. The green salsa, jalapeños, and pumpkin seeds on top are dynamite.

This is our go-to place for Mexican takeout in Kennett Square. We regularly get the special meat burrito with lomo (seasoned shredded pork), burrito with asada, and chicken quesadilla. The huaraches and enchiladas are also really good. All meals come with a ton of food. They give you little hot sauce containers and limes to go with your meal. There’s a small eating area where you often find people dining, but we typically to takeout because we order during the week and the food travels well. They’re always really quick when we call; about 15 minutes and the food is ready.

The owner is almost always the one who answers the phone and greets you when you come in. You can tell that he cares about his restaurant and making his customers happy, and you can feel good that you’re supporting a small local business, not a big chain. (If you happen to be helped by someone other than the owner, like a moody teen, don’t let it put you off).

The prices are reasonable, especially considering how much food you get.

One note: PAY CASH or you’ll be charged a credit card fee that they don’t even tell you about. This is the one complaint I have about this place. I know that many businesses are now doing this, but there are no signs in the restaurant warning of this fee and if you tell them you’re paying by card, they type a higher amount into the credit card machine without telling you.

The small parking lot could definitely be repaved and the building looks a little iffy in its lighting and placement among car repair shops and an apartment construction site, but it all adds to the feeling that you’ve found a hidden gem.

Parking: Not too many spots, but I’ve never found it totally full. Pavement is bumpy with lots of holes.
