Solid neighborhood dive in South Philly that allows smoking inside. Fast and friendly bar service with trivia on a Thursday night. Perfect pit stop for a beer and a shot and a smoke while cruising the Avenue.

My girlfriend and I were visiting Philly from Oregon, looking for a good dive on a Tuesday night. Struck out like 3 times—then we found Grumpy's.
Opened the door and realized they allowed smoking indoors. Neither of us are smokers (I quit 11 years ago), but we absolutely loved that they allowed it. And we aren't right wingers either, we're pretty lib. People are as free to smoke as they are to leave. I hadnt seen a bar like that since I was a teenager. We both definitely took showers immediately upon getting back to the hotel though.
They have cheap drinks, cash only, bartender was a bit standoffish until I tipped him a modest amount on our first round; understandable. He was a G the rest of the night. They were the only place we found that had late-night karaoke on a Tuesday, complete with a jukebox loaded with Creed. But we just played Booty Man by Tim Wilson the whole time anyway.
One pool table, quality felt and cues. We played some local people for fun and won because they scratched on the 8-ball. They gave us a lot of great recommendations on where to go for Wednesday and Thursday karaoke.
Great people here, made a lot of friends. Highly recommend. Showed up at 1 am so we didn't eat any of the food.

Great customer friendly environment with knowledgeable bartender. Would be a great first stop in Philly because they will help you find all the best places to go and things to do.

Great neighborhood bar. The owner Joe is a gentleman and great dude. Andy the bartender is a great dude as well. I love South Philly and I love this bar.

Good people, cheap beer, good pool table. Smoking bar. So if you're not into breathing smoke it's better to find someplace else.

My brother and I came here to drink for the first time because a friend of ours was throwing a small get together. It is the FIRST and LAST TIME I give them business. We spent over $100 after an hour or so and tipped the bartender at least 30%.Towards the end of the night another customer (white female) and I start talking about a book then she told me I’m a narcissist and she’s smarter than me. So then some other customer (tall light complexion black male) tells me to stop talking about people and confronted me in a threatening manner. All the while I was carrying myself in a peaceful and respectful manner. At that point the bartender (white male w/glasses) comes at me and pushes me out of the venue causing my glass of beer to fall out of my hand and break. I was shocked and didn’t know why I was being treated like piece of dirt.I hope management sees this because they need to do something about it if they want to make this right. Or else you’re losing a good customer.Don't support this place... it's about WOKENESS and COMMUNISM and treating new customers like dirt.
Foods back? Damn, i guess i need to abandon my AA meetings. Lets see if its good enough to keep me off the wagon

visited Saturday to try the cheesesteak and chicken sandwiches I'd read about. Great bar, neighborhood spot. Mario the bartender could not have been more friendly and welcoming. The cook, Shorty, made awesome cheesesteaks and chicken sandwiches. Good beer selection, too. All around a great stop, I will definitely be back!
