Small, crowded bakery, but worth a quick visit to grab a pastry! Known for their cannolis, they also offer a handful of gluten-free cookies/macarons. I had the pignoli and it was so soft and delicious.
The best cookies and cakes in the city
Pastries are always stale and old. The fruit on top of them is usually going bad by the time you purchase it. To top it off, the business itself is incredibly rude to its own neighbors. Skip this place! It’s no different than what you get at a grocery store. Really.
What’s more annoying is all the out of towners that think they can block and double park on the street to come to this place.
About as good as it gets
Isgro is sensational. A true old-school and family-owned Italian bakery that offers so many different cookies, pastries, cakes, and (of course) cannoli. Both the classic ricotta and mascarpone are delicious. The shells have a perfectly golden-brown and flaky crust with a satisfying crunch. You'll be hard-pressed to find better in Philly.
The service here is always very inviting and welcoming. When my partner and I came here to put together a box of cookies for a Christmas gift, the owners served free champagne and treats to everyone in line: thanking us for our patronage.
You'll have to be patient during peak hours, but their ticketing system ensures that the line moves as efficiently as possible. It's a mainstay of the Italian Market and a must to try at least once!
This could have been a five star review.... Loved everything we purchased.... was very excited about the lemon ricotta cookies. We are more than happy to pay the price for a quality good.....but sadly the lack of care in packaging the cookies led to a horrible crumbly mess that couldn't be shared w guests . Bought a pound and a half to get ZERO cookies unbroken/ unstuck. so perhaps if they were layered w paper they could survive?
The highlight for us were the anise and fruit & nut biscotti.
Never again. Isgro’s pastries might be famous, but the pickup process is a complete disgrace. I ordered ahead and still waited over an hour just to get my box. No paid pickup line. No organization. No respect for customers’ time. They’ve got so much business, they’ve clearly stopped caring. Only at Isgro would someone think, “Let’s treat preorder customers worse than walk-ins!” May your cannoli shells crack, your sfogliatelle turn soggy, and your ricotta always come out gritty. Because no matter how sweet the pastries are, this experience leaves a truly bitter taste. May the malocchio follow you to your grave.
The best Cannoli in the city, hands down. Everything else is amazing as well.

We grabbed an assortment of desserts ad cookies that barely made it home of the train! The Eagles themed cookies were a big hit at a paper the next day, and the cannoli were top level. Very patient staff as we tried to decide. Can't wait to go back!

While Philly can boast dozens of great bakeries throughout the city, South Philly manages to hold a large number of them. One would think that the numerous awards, like James Beard, Food and Wine, Travel, Conde Naste, etc. would prove their worth but in case you don't get into the city much or are visiting from out of state or from across the world, I believe Isgro's is the best bakery in the city. Why? First, they offer a huge selection of desserts, cakes, etc. with classic Italian and American options as well as modern interpretations of classics, and newer creations. Second, they do so with a lack of pretension and their staff and the overall atmosphere never feels stuck up like some other long-established food establishments, some of which are within a few blocks. So kudos to the owners and management for keeping things reasonably priced, well-stocked, and very friendly while basking in their long history and richly deserved success.
Oh - and the cannolis....damn.
