I spent a month in Japan in April-May 2025. In October, I came to Phila. for a conference and found this spot on Friday after conference. It immediately brought me back to contemporary authentic restaurants in Tokyo and Osaka. The food, the atmosphere, all on lock as exactly like what we ate in Japan. If you're used to the kind of greasy rice and yum yum sauce hibachi you get in the suburbs, you will be surprised because THIS is *real* modern Japanese cuisine. Go around the corner to the liquor store and buy a few bottles of sake or shochu, then come here to delve into a genuine Japanese evening out!

A tiny, family-owned spot treasured by locals, Kai has become my favorite sushi spot. Selections ranging from traditional sashimi to the best hand-rolled sushi in the city, to boba tea and mochi, it is impossible for me to leave this restaurant hungry! Even the quality of the side dishes is excellent but understated. The atmosphere is perfect for solo diners, couples, and small parties. Please note: try to visit early, as the restaurant has a wall on an alley.

Very nice cozy place!!!! Everything was amazing. The food is good and cheap, fresh rolls, very nice service. I would definitely be back. We were 6 ppl and everyone had a good time, food and drinks.

This is a gem of a place with amazing food and delightful service. I’ll never miss a day of this neighborhood place with outstanding sushi. The warm eel roll soothed my soul after a long day, and the salmon was thick, sweet, fresh and delicious. If I could give 10 stars, I would. Delicious food, great service at a wonderful price. If you live in Philly or you are just visiting, don’t miss it.
