This place is a no go for me, I live down the street and the new manager is rude. The old manager was awesome. I won’t go near the place. I am sure the owner doesn’t know how the manager treats customers…

Put your name down early and expect an hour + wait, but don’t give up the ship. Once seated, it’s worth the wait. Meal was impeccable. Hostess and waiter were both paid actors in a Miyazaki film. Sake had our whole group roaring laughing before the first app even hit the table. Recommend sharing as many small plates as you can muster and then ordering a few extras you don’t need, then splitting off and ordering individual sushi platters. Everyone left as happy sleepy kittens with bellies full. We begrudgingly left the little habanero pepper shaker for future patrons to enjoy. 10/10 for a night out in Philly.

I was really excited to try this restaurant. The service was decent, and my husband and I enjoyed the drinks we ordered (a highball and a chu-hai). However, the food was a big disappointment.

I grew up in Japan and am very familiar with izakaya-style dining and Japanese food in general. We ordered the Ebi Shumai, Gyoza, Karaage Wings, Uni Cream Pasta, Bloc Party, and the Menchi Katsu Bun. Unfortunately, everything was just meh.

I almost sent back the Uni Cream Pasta because it was extremely salty, and all I could taste was an overpowering lemon flavor—which wasn’t mentioned in the menu description. I’ve had Uni Cream Pasta in Japan many times, and this tasted nothing like it. The menu also listed corn as an ingredient, but I didn’t see any in the dish.

What confuses me is that a friend of mine recently visited this restaurant and enjoyed the pasta. She’s also quite familiar with Japanese food, so I wonder if we had an inexperienced chef the night we went. But I’ve also seen some reviews saying similar things about this pasta dish, so I’m not sure if we just had bad luck—or if this is really how it’s supposed to taste.

I really wanted to like this place. It’s hard to find Japanese restaurants in Philadelphia that go beyond sushi and ramen. Japanese cuisine has so much more to offer. I spent around $150 before tip—I expected it to be pricey, but sadly, it just wasn’t worth it.

Unfortunately, I won’t be returning.

Amazing food, just don’t understand why they don’t have reservations for some of their seats, no one likes waiting an hour to get in, unless you get in right at opening. Doesn’t matter, weekend or weekday, if you don’t come at opening there’s a wait. It sure would be nice to come and get seated right away and not try and find something to do for an hour. You can always charge for no shows on opentable or resy then take whatever walkins.

I was excited to try an acclaimed sushi spot in Philly since I’ve been to several Michelin-starred omakase experiences. I couldn’t get a reservation for omakase, so I walked in for dinner.

Unfortunately, it didn’t meet my expectations and left me underwhelmed.

I started with the uni cream pasta. It had zero uni flavor — instead, it was dominated by lemon. The presentation was flashy, but the actual flavor and balance of the dish were missing.

The hamachi ponzu was probably the best dish, but even then, one of my bites tasted fishy.

The chirashi was a huge disappointment. The fish didn’t taste fresh. At this price point, I expected fish with clear flavor profiles but every piece tasted the same lol.

Lastly, the miso black cod roll was confusing. The roll was small, mostly filled with lettuce (a strange choice), and I couldn’t taste the cod.

We have been meaning to come here forever. The fish was fresh, the rice was delicious, nori crisp. You couldn't ask for more.

Arrived at 7pm on Friday- 45 min wait. Waiter was attentive and food came at a reasonable time. Not the place to go if you want traditional sushi with many roll options. Pretty good food- no complaints on that end. Only note: it is super dark in there, everyone around us was reading the menu with their phone flashlights.

The chirashi sushi had one of the limpest, oldest raw fish I've ever had, I couldn't even finish it. I'm from Japan and while I understand that it is hard to match the quality of food from there, I would expect fresher fish with actual texture from a place that serves omakase and has a Japanese owner. Who, judging by the incorrect kanji sign on the restroom (it was 推 not the correct 押), most likely has no idea how to read or speak Japanese.
Waiter was great though.

Izakaya Review:

The food is here is good albeit overpriced. You can definitely tell the fish is high quality, and many cuts were buttery and not fishy at all like the salmon, fatty tuna or mackerel.

Of the things we tried, we really like the tuna guac, nasu dengaku, chirashi, and sashimi (really anything that highlights the fish). The yamabogo roll was also delicious but the burdock root overpowered the rest of the roll.

The more basic rolls like the spicy crunch tuna were pretty average. The uni pasta was creamy but too salty for our liking. Overall, I would probably not come back for the izakaya as I don’t think the value is quite there.
