This restaurant (formerly 40 West) is under new management. It is in a performance venue, which can be a plus or minus if a concert is going on when you are there. It is difficult to carry on a conversation during a performance but if you are there for the concert, not a problem. Last evening the restaurant was woefully understaffed and the kitchen was terribly slow - more than an hour wait for entrees after we had finished the appetizer. Food was randomly delivered - half of the table, then 10 minutes later the other half. We had to ask for silverware when the entrees finally appeared. The Caesar salad was well-prepared but the romaine was warm and the bowl was warm. The entrees were good with the exception of inedibly burnt and flaccid poor quality asparagus. The waiter kindly rounded up some replacement asparagus. Our waiter was hard-working and very professional but the kitchen was apparently overwhelmed and the food was not prepared in a timely manner. We used to enjoy the previous iteration of this venue but will not return for dining given the price point and inferior dining experience.
Delicious dinner. Scallops, pasta with seafood, bronzino and lamb filled pasta. Everyone loves their dinners. Service was excellent. Nice addition to pgh dining.
Harder to find parking now that Pittsburgh has blocked off parking along north ave. We did find some on side street. Great food, but wish there were more gluten free options, although they do have excellent gluten free pasta.
First visit at this restaurant. Wonderful unusual menu. Presentation beautiful. Not at all noisy, like most restaurants. Probably because they didn't happen to have music that night. We will return.
It was a really nice night for my wife and I. Our server, I believe her name was Ladona, was excellent. The meals were great. This wasn't our first time in but it was another good dining experience for us.
The space provides a wonderful place to enjoy conversation. The food is interesting and excellent. We had the artichoke confit. And the veal chop Parmesan and pumpkin ravioli were both delicious. It is expensive but it is worth it. The service was exemplary. We will be back.
This was our first visit to Alfabeto. We dined early so the room was not crowded and fairly quiet. The space is minimalist but comfortable. Our server was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu and ingredients. The food was excellent. The bresaola was dark, tender, and almost transparent, served over a tasty potato galette. The salads were crisp with a nice Caesar dressing. We all thought our mains were very well prepared and delicious. They included a shrimp linguine, a veal chop parmigiana, and the fish of the day, grouper, served over grilled eggplant. We did not have dessert. Overall, the four of us enjoyed our meals and look forward to another visit.
Our brunch at Cucina Alfabeto this morning was amazing! Whenever in Pittsburgh, celebrating an occasion, we make Cucina Alfabeto a destination. The dining experience consistently exceeds expectations, and today was no exception. Marcia, who cared for us, was an incredible host, she expertly offered the perfect balance of enough time to ponder the menu without feeling as if we were rushed or left hanging. Our meal was incredibly tasty and fresh. Along with poached eggs we had corn fritters, guacamole, and delicious sauteed mushrooms. Portions are ample and beautifully plated! We experienced the added delight of a musical group rehearsing in preparation for a festival performance in the independent bookstore City of Asylum - an unexpected delight! My only disappointment is that we live 90 miles away and don't make the trip to Cucina Alfebeto often enough!
The food and service were outstanding, truly. The ambience was better than the prior 40 North. Personally, I don't care for the "live" events going on more or less in the dining area, especially on a Friday or Saturday eve. We left before the music began but were assured the music - jazz- would be complimentary to the dining experience. That said the acoustics aren't forgiving so I will check the schedule before making reservations, next time. As most know, parking is a bit of an issue on North Ave. as well as the surrounding streets. Fortunately, parking restrictions ease a bit after 7 pm Fridays. Make sure you read posted signs before leaving your vehicle. Alfabeto is definitely worth the effort. The food is delicious; high quality ingredients, locally sourced, and exquisitly prepared.
This is a brand new restaurant and open only a couple of weeks. Has great potential and will be fantastic once they get the new opening bugs worked out. Menu is very nice and the presentations are imaginative and exceptionally prepared. We're going back with friends in a couple weeks.

A gem of a restaurant ! Exceptional cuisine , crafted beautifully and served professionally and warmly by a highly skilled team both back and front of house ! If you are looking for an exceptional and truly Pittsburgh experience book here and you have the added bonus to peruse the well curated bookshop or listen to the jazz musicians who often play in the lounge area .
Terrific meal from start to finish! Loved the zucchini blossoms- a treat not found on many menu's. The fennel salad was delicious and refreshing. Lobster pasta dish was perfect as well. Totally loved the veal Parmesan- chop! Lightly breaded, perfectly cooked, with a delicious marinara and fresh mozzarella. The panna cotta was a perfect end- to a perfect meal! Our server, Veronica, and the entire staff were friendly, hardworking and welcoming. We will definitely return!
My husband had the goat cheese omelet...delicate and delicious...I had the Carbonara which was also tasty...I missed the mock tails you could order at 40 North...they also didn't have any iced tea...drink choice, very limited...but the food was good and worth returning...very nice waitress...
Menu is delicious. Loved the squash puree and bread service. So many restaurants are charging a fee for bread and an additional charge for the spread! Very nice to enjoy your lovely offering. Fennel and crab salad a nice surprise. Loved the pumpkin ravioli and lobster linguine. We are gathering a group of four to return hopefully week after next. we hope this fourth iteration at City of Asylum is a long term success. Welcome to the neighborhood. We much enjoyed celebrating our 55th wedding anniversary with you.
We've eaten at Cucina Alfabeto several times since its recent opening. Each time we've brought a guests or guests. Every meal has been gloriously presented, and a culinary masterpiece. Each one of our guests, even the very fussiest, was delighted was the meal, the service, and the ambiance.
