This is the only AUTHENTIC German restaurant in Pittsburgh. The other two “German” restaurants in the city are good, but too Americanized. I don’t know how I’ve never heard of Max’s, but I’ll definitely be back. The food is top notch. Also, apparently this place was originally Max and Erma’s (not the chain) and at one point (if not still) had the largest collection of Tiffany lamps in the county. I’ve never seen them as ceiling fans like this. Very cool vibe in here.
I have nothing bad to say! The food was absolutely amazing, the service would fill up my drink without needing to ask and the old timey atmosphere is amazing! Overall 10/10 (5.0 stars)!
Our food was awesome!! I really enjoyed it. The atmosphere was so warm and cozy. The menus described everything in great detail and they even have German non-alcoholic beer.
Good food and service. Has a great combo of authentic German food and bar food staples.
Food is frozen, always cold on the inside after being cooked. Looked in the kitchen and all I seen was dirty this, dirty that, like how are they serving food in a non clean kitchen? Microwave so dirty it hasn't been cleaned in years! Yet people eat here, it's disgusting how dirty your dishes be when food is placed on it. Service is slow and unprofessional. Wouldn't recommend coming here if you have family.
Terrific find. Previously lived in Germany for 15 years and found the food and drink authentic. The Rubin, potato pancakes, and kase spatzle were very good. The Weisen Bier was as good as it gets. Service and ambience were perfect.
I had never been here before so I was pleasantly surprised. I loved it the minute I walked in the door. Our server was very attentive, anticipated our every need and made appropriate suggestions. The food was so good! I had the Devonshire and it really was the best I've ever had. I think we found our new favorite restaurant.
Great German American food. A traditional favorite.

Nice old German bar restaurant in Pittsburgh's Northside. My 75 year old mother, cousin, cousin's husband and I all met here for lunch. To briefly summarize, it was a very good quality overall experience.
I had soup and split the Reuben sandwich with my mother. Both soups and the sandwich were very tasty. Max's was very busy during lunch on the day we stopped, Service was very good even during the busy lunchtime rush.
We all sat together and ordered our meals. Prices at Max's were very reasonable. My total check for our group of 4 was under 50 dollars. In 2024 money an excellent value. My mother and I enjoyed the food very much. Max's will now be on the list of good quality local restaurants.
I will update my review after my next visit.
Parking: Keep in mind it is a city location with street parking. I personally had no issues and found a spot close by. Where I parked it was Free 2 hour parking too.

I haven't had authentic German food since visiting Vienna, Austria in 2006. I had heard wonderful things about Max's. I ordered the Wiener Schnitzel with applesauce and french fries. The Wiener Schnitzel tasted even better than I remember it tasting in Vienna! Definitely authentic delicious German food! The applesauce had chunks of apple&was to die for. The meat was tender, not too dry at all. My husband ordered the Sausage platter, which was just as tasty as my meal. The Knackwurst and Weisswurst were our favorite out of the sausages. The Bratwurst was just as good. Kind of reminded me of breakfast sausage in a way. He got the hot potato german salad (perfection) and the potato pancakes (must try). We ordered takeout, but they have a cute atmosphere for dining in. If you love authentic German food I HIGHLY recommend Max's Allegheny Tavern. You won't be disappointed!

The food in this place was delicious! I couldn't recommend it enough. The food is a little pricy though, but it's very worth it for what you get. My service was amazing, too. They brought things on the first time when you asked and weren't needy on the "how's the food" or the refills!
Kid-friendliness: Came on Halloween, they were handing out candy!
Wheelchair accessibility: Small step on the entrance door, inside has ramps.
