We chose to sit at a booth in the bar area which was a mistake on our part. We didn't realize that our server was the bartender. The bar was crowded so she was very busy there and not able to check on us very often. We normally sit at a table in the dining area and have a dedicated server which we will do again the next time we visit. We really enjoy Max's and eat there a few times in a year. If you love German food I highly recommend this restaurant.

Been eating here for decades. Always good. Plentiful portions. Decent freshness. Sometimes presentation is dated, but taste is there.

I went to this restaurant because we love German food. We were not disappointed. The schnitzel was amazing as was the red cabbage. The spätzle was very good. I had onion rings and they were okay. The iced tea is one of the best I've ever had. The einlauf soup was exceptional. The area that my husband comes from, it's more like an egg drop soup with vegetables in it. But this one was with semolina dumplings and it was even better.

Good food, better service. Great local spot with Yinzer-German fare. Servers are so friendly and attentive. I've been here many times over 15+ years with consistency..

This is the kind of place I wish was located near me. Friendly staff, great German beer on tap, and good food. OK, the mason jars are a bit odd, but that's probably just me.

Great food. Reasonably priced. Polite staff. Ask about it being haunted.

We are visiting Pittsburgh on a work trip. We found Max's based on what is close to our lodging. The building itself is very charming. Inside is clean and super welcoming. Our waitress was Jean and she was very kind, helpful, and quick with anything we asked for. The food was fresh and came out quickly. A very authentic German menu. Sadly, our time was cut short due to a fellow patron seated behind me and with tight seating this person was very close. He proceeded to blow his nose aggressively at the table, while sneezing and sniffing repeatedly. This is absolutely no fault of the establishment. However, when I expressed my concern and wish for to-go boxes and my reason why, Jean quickly gathered everything we needed. She was very empathetic to our concern. Thank you Jean for taking care of us. If we are ever in Pittsburgh again we will most definitely come back to Max's.

This is the only AUTHENTIC German restaurant in Pittsburgh. The other two “German” restaurants in the city are good, but too Americanized. I don’t know how I’ve never heard of Max’s, but I’ll definitely be back. The food is top notch. Also, apparently this place was originally Max and Erma’s (not the chain) and at one point (if not still) had the largest collection of Tiffany lamps in the county. I’ve never seen them as ceiling fans like this. Very cool vibe in here.

I have nothing bad to say! The food was absolutely amazing, the service would fill up my drink without needing to ask and the old timey atmosphere is amazing! Overall 10/10 (5.0 stars)!

Our food was awesome!! I really enjoyed it. The atmosphere was so warm and cozy. The menus described everything in great detail and they even have German non-alcoholic beer.

Good food and service. Has a great combo of authentic German food and bar food staples.
