Good but not great. White cake with very sugary icing and almonds. Nothing special.

Prantls has historically been my FAVORITE bakery in all of Pittsburgh. But prices have really gone up in recent years (almost doubling for my favorite items), and quality standards have gone down. The last 2 times I visited the North Side location, I received a stale cookie. A stale Prantls cookie is still pretty great, but I used to pay about $2 for a fresh iced cookie, and now it’s at least $4 and stale… 2 visits in a row! I visited on July 8th and saw old Fourth of July cookies with red frosting that had faded into the white frosting. I also ordered an Almond Torte bar (a take down of their famous cake, and something I’ve ordered many times). I mentioned that I get it every year on my anniversary because it’s what we had at our wedding. Today I received a chocolate version of the almond torte. It was quite a surprise when we unboxed it at home! Not what I asked for. I’m still giving them 4 stars because I know inflation sucks, the pandemic was hard on small businesses, and even stale or incorrectly ordered Prantls is still pretty tasty. But if you visit, maybe try out the Shadyside location?

We are from SC and wanted to try the Burnt Almond Torte for which Prantl’s is famous. We did not end up getting it because it needs to be refrigerated and we did not have access to refrigeration, but we bought tons of other pastries and they were all amazing! There was even one that was smaller and similar to the torte so we tried that.
The soda in their cooler was delicious too - not too sweet!
The ladies working were so welcoming and sweet. If you are in the area, you should check them out!

Burnt Almond Torte! Easy to get to. Neighborhood is sketchy, but not too extreme.

Best sugar cookies I ever had. Me and my boyfriend loved the oatmeal cookies because they were chewy soft and perfect amount of sugar. We also like some dinner rolls that looked like muffin shape. I forgot to try the blue Barry muffin. I’m going back for that.

The "famous" burnt almond tort was good but nothing special, and I've had many from other bakeries. Thumbprint cookies are not thumbprints but cut and bake sugar cookies with a blob of icing. Both lacked flavor. Small coconut cakes were dry and tasted like the cake had been frozen too long. The frosting was also dry and peeling off the cake. This was a Saturday morning and selection was lacking. Sadly we had been excited to try this staple but were quite disappointed.

Everything just dry, from the donuts to the wraps. Don’t even carry milk or apple juice just water and soda…This place was so much better when it was Priory

We stop here every time we’re back in Pittsburgh and get the burnt almond torte cake. It’s a local favorite, and for good reason!
