This place has not changed since the 70s! If anything the booths need some work. The chili is good and try the burgers with the hot sauce. We take quarts home as I no longer live in the area. No you can not compare the chili (as mentioned in other reviews) to DC or other cities but you can not compare Schuylkill County to those areas either. The chili has a sweet, smokey flavor with a bit of heat. I notice some days it tastes different than others. Maybe it depends on timing of when it is made. We have shared it with others and no one said it was bad! I have relatives that get quarts of it for other people too. I will say we are hooked.
So this is a local place lodged in the local lore. The "chili" holds a grasp on some local hearts, but I would say it is no more than average. Now, there are all kinds of chili and Tommys take on chili is a bit unique. I would say it is a soup like texture with pulverized low grade beef in a sauce that is border line bland. The only "taste" of the chili is the medium heat. No other flavors or seasonings are detectable and there are no beans or other solid ingredients. The liquid broth is greasy due to the beef, which also takes away from any seasonings. I personally believe this "chili" is best served as a burger or hot dog topping, kind of like Danny's sauce from Ashland. The location is on a corner with only street parking and is in scenic (sarcasm) downtown St Clair. They have good cheap take out, to include big old PBR Tall Boys (24 ouncers) and Milwaukee's Best six packs. So don't come here if you expect something like the chili from Ben's in DC, the unique Cincy blends, or any other tasty variation of chili. Tommys belongs in the same category as the Coney in Pottsville: its "legendary" status is a false aura created by generations of overindulged Skooks looking for grub after putting in a shift at a local bar.
The best chili I have ever eaten hands down. The perfect amount of heat as it don’t over power the other flavors.
It's where to go for breakfast or lunch and local news, tips and directions. There is also take out beer here, because you can't buy beer in liquor stores in PA and they have Yuengling Beer on Tap, from America's oldest brewery (which is located less than four miles away.) It's a family owned and run business and full of locals and friendly folk.
I have been eating the chili there for four decades, nothing beats a chili and a beer at Tommy's M&S
We are from the area originally and this is a local staple. We get food from here to go when we are in town!
If you are ever in the Pennsylvania coal region and need a hearty lunch for not alot of money this is the place. It's a hole in the wall, right on Main St. in Saint Clair. The inside is a real greasy spoon type of place. The people are always friendly. The food is always good and cheap too. But the chili, the chili is the best. Nothing beats Tommy's chili on a cold day...
Ignore the looks and order the chili. If you like chili you MUST stop and get a bowl or get a quart to go. The chili hasn't changed in 30 years and I highly recomend it with a cold Yuengling Beer.
