“The space, with a room of some size, is pleasant, despite having little natural light. Grilled dishes are the house's specialty, although the food, in general, is not stunning in terms of preparation. On the day we had lunch, the service and waiting time for the dishes was exaggerated (more than an hour for four dishes, two of which were the same and one was the dish of the day), as the chef had apparently arrived late to the restaurant (!!). The service is affable and friendly. However, there is some disorganization in the collection and delivery of orders. The desserts are acceptable. In terms of quality/price it is a little out of balance (between €20 and €30 per person, including bolo do caco, drinks and dessert), so the most appropriate rating would be between 3 and 4.
It has all the conditions to improve (service and kitchen).“

“We were advised at A Traineira (Caniço de Baixo) and we are completely satisfied.
The bolo do caco at the beginning fresh from the wood-fired oven together with our traditional Poncha was divine. Then the picanha accompanied by 2 risottos (onion, beans and chorizo) was the highlight. We ordered it rare to our liking and it arrived that way. Then, at the end, the mousse clearly made in-house with hazelnuts on top was perfect, not to mention the always attentive service. I highly recommend it!“

“My daughter and I went, we were very well attended to, the black beans were very tasty and the meats were tender and very tasty. The service from the team was professional from the beginning, but the gentleman who served the meat was 10 stars (Mr. Paulo Sérgio) and always served with great friendliness, good humor and willingness, it was a pleasure to be served by him. Super recommended! On Monday, it really was starting the week off on the right foot. Thanks!“

“The absolute best estepada! You can see how they prepare it and the meat is beautiful even raw! The portion for €15 is larger than elsewhere (with bolo do caco was enough for two) Fast and professional service. Pleasant environment. Parking on the street in front of the restaurant.“

“Recomendo a viola vivamente, sou Madeirense e vivo a alguns anos no estrangeiro. Quando vou à Madeira sempre um visito o viola. É um locar muito frequentado e por vezes temos de esperar por uma mesa mas vale a pena.
A comida é saborosa.

“I had the pleasure of eating in this restaurant, the atmosphere is welcoming (the restaurant reminds me of Italy).
I am a vegetarian and had the opportunity to decide between some dishes.
I chose a simple vegan dish with refined taste.
Very very good.

“We got there by accident while driving to the nuns' valley. It is a place visited mainly by the local community with local decor and atmosphere (I personally love and appreciate such places). The food is very tasty, fries cut from fresh potatoes (the large portion of fries is huge), delicious meat, wonderful vegetables. Local service with very basic English but I highly recommend it.“

“Small, remote restaurant. Homemade cakes and smoothies are really tasty and freshly made. The poncha was rather medium, but above all not cold enough. Nevertheless, everything fits. I think you can definitely stop here. We didn't eat anything, but what we saw looked pretty good so far.“

“Tried the Pastel de Nata many times before: in Portugal, Macau, HK, and never liked it. Until this one - it’s a different level of this pastry! Never thought it could taste like this. Go to Sta Cruz just to try it!!
The service is amazing too!! Love everything about this place, thank you!?“
“My husband and I ate at this lovely restaurant twice during our stay in canico. The service was very good, a good choice of food on offer! Staff were very friendly! The food, wow! Fabulous, I had tuna, it was absolutely delicious, the sauce was so tasty! my husband had beef, so tender! Thoroughly enjoyable experience! Thank you!“
“If you are looking for delicious food with exceptional service this is the spot to visit when you are in Santa Cruz Maderia. Henrique has an amazing talent of providing classical Portuguese dishes with a modern twist. I have had the privilege of eating here several times and we’ve adored every meal!!! The chef Henrique is kind and generous along with all the staff. Don’t hesitate, as this place will not disappoint. I wish I could give this place 10 stars !!!!! The food is sooooo good !!! We are from Canada and can’t wait to come back and eat here again ! Thank you to everyone at Doce for giving us such a unique and welcoming experience in Santa Cruz.“

“A quaint restaurant, an honest menu for meat eaters, but that's what is mainly eaten in Madeira. I think it's very inexpensive and I think wine connoisseurs will also feel very comfortable here. Boss (I think) very open and attentive.“

“Portela À Vista Restaurant is fantastic and very easy to find. I have never been to a more beautiful restaurant with such a fantastic view of nature.
On Saturdays, we knew in advance that there would be a lot of people waiting for a table, so we called the day before to make a reservation. When we arrived at Portela Restaurant, we only had to wait for a few minutes.
We asked the waitress for the traditional food, espetada with French fries, and the food was excellent. The prices for food and drinks were very reasonable considering the quality offered.
However, we were not pleased with the service. The waitress was occasionally inconvenient and often seemed upset about things that customers shouldn’t need to be concerned with.“

“We had a very nice experience at the hole in one. Staff has been very friendly, they were quick and even when it was really crowded for the UEFA starting game in Munich, they handled everything very well.
The place is also really nice, always felt like enjoying the evening!“

“We ate the chopped and sword fillet and they were good and tasty. I never say this but the companions' doses are a bit excessive.
Poncha I honestly didn't think it was anything special.
In terms of service, it was probably the best I had during my stay in Madeira, very friendly and good-natured.
The wooden dance was a pleasant surprise, my family and I loved it and I even participated in it!“

“We really love this place. We love the simple menu and very well cooked fresh food. We have been twice it's so good. Both times we had the chicken served hot with a sort of piri piri, the best homemade fries with fresh garlic, superb Bolo do Caco better than anywhere else and a lovely fresh salad with Avocado. Simple food but the highest quality and nice friendly staff serving on. This place for us is one of the best kept secrets in Funchal, don't tell everyone.“

“This is easily a must-visit restaurant. The food is fantastic. The bread is delicious and fresh. The skewers is perfectly medium cooked, full of juice, well seasoned with the smell of grilling charcoals. The sea bass is so fresh that you can smell the sea when it’s on the table. And this is no figurative speaking.
The atmosphere is wonderful, local and home feeling. The staff is super friendly. He joked around, offered liquors and gave up many tips for our trips. Really made me felt welcome.
And they have that beautiful bird, very adorable, interactive with you.
All in all, great experience. Definitely recommended.“

“One of the oldest restaurants in the region, but I had never stopped there for a meal.Although it was calm when we got there on a Saturday. dinner, quickly filled up.Our service was friendly and fast.We ordered chicken and kebab which was divine. The side dishes were good, but priced well above average.Serving of corn €9.50Serving of salad €9.50A skewer of meat €16One and a half chicken €21It was a good experience, but honestly we thought it was expensive for what was presented (only the kebab was actually very good)“
“We came in the evening, only locals in the pub, they said there was nothing to eat. We ordered a ponche - lemon, apparently the locals drink it, and we got free squids fried with onions, then broadsword heads, and finally tuna. A wonderful local culture experience!“

“Dinner in a traditional Portuguese restaurant.
During our trip we tried many espaditas, but this one was definitely among the best, and the pork one in particular was my absolute favorite.
The pork espaditas was flavorful, tasty, soft and well roasted, really special.
Super recommended.
Attentive and friendly staff, ready to advise in case of indecision.“

“The food was divine. We ate kebabs and they were very juicy and tasty, the limpets were also very good and the desserts were also good (I had apple pie with ice cream)
The service I believe that many people will find 5 stars and well for me it's just not the type of service that I love, they are a little too high but that said it's all too "right" but this is just personal preference they are all friendly and very professional.
A little expensive “

“Many thanks to the whole team at Zarcos Restaurant. We really enjoyed our stay there - from the excellent service to the excellent food and wine, as well as the enthusiasm for the Euro 2024 football games shown, to the wonderful view from the lovingly landscaped terrace overlooking the large bay of Funchal.
We went there several times during our Madeira vacation and were never disappointed. We can fully recommend stopping here! Kind regards to the whole team and the boss! Jimmy & Corinna“

“We came here twice in 1 week and both times the food was amazing. The espetada madeirense and the cod fish were fantastic. Also, very friendly servers and the view is absolutely breathtaking. If you go on a Saturday, you will enjoy the bailinho da Madeira ( Madeiran Folklore music and dancing) It starts at 8pm. Price is very reasonable for the quality of food.
Definitely recommend.“

“We walked by Vila Ventura several times looking down the terrace and it looked nice. Unfortunately, there was only room for us inside where there were no other people. So a bit less atmosphere for us but great anyway. Staff is friendly and service is quick. The food is great and looks very nice. It's a bit expensive compared to other restaurants in the area - probably because it's part of a hotel.“

“This restaurant is worth discovering. It is located in a quiet square in the middle of the city of Funchal.
We were very happy about the great meat selection and the plates to share. Especially the roughly hand-cut tartare with a great seasoning was a dream.
The staff was friendly and helpful in the selection and quantity of dishes. It was also no problem to take allergies and intolerances into account and the dishes were modified by the kitchen.
The kitchen is small and you need a little patience. But it's definitely worth it!
Wheelchair accessibility: The terrace is easily accessible with ramps. I didn't visit the inside or the toilet.“

“This restaurant was recommended to us by a local person from Camara do Lobos, and we understand why. Modern restaurant, with good views, very attentive, friendly and professional staff.
I am not one to eat meat in my daily life, but I read that on the Island one of the typical dishes is “espetada”. This restaurant is one of the best known in town; We have tried the regional espetada and what a delight, the meat is just right, tender, we have accompanied it with a salad of tomato, cucumber, fresh cheese and French fries.
The restaurant is part of a group, the other is 20m away and is called Vila do Peixe which appears in the Michelin guide.
Without a doubt we recommend it 100%.“

“Fantastic, it was my first time at the establishment, I've always been to the drive, but the facilities are always clean, the staff doesn't stop if people don't have the empathy to lift the used trays and take them to the appropriate trash disposal areas, there is an immediate element of the staff getting up, cleaning the table and leaving everything spotless. We place the order and it is promptly delivered to us, even though the establishment is full. Congratulations, the atmosphere is SUPER welcoming despite being a fast-food place.
Kid-friendliness: It has adequate space for children, while parents can be a little relaxed.“

“Very unique, local experience. We ordered upstairs and watched while our beef was cut and put on the skewer, grabbed some bread and wine and walked around to the dining area downstairs. You cook the meat yourself, eat with your fingers, and drink wine from a paper cup. It is not fancy, but I am not complaining! The food was great, and it was a great experience.“
