One of my favorite bars in the world. Great atmosphere, ideal for date nights. The drinks are fantastic and the owner/staff are friendly. Don't expect a party, but it's the perfect bar for conversations. Not cheap but well worth it.

So cool.
So discreet. Props to the reviewer who posted photos of the door or I’d be floating around the corner and back 20 diff ways fooled to think it was in the Patati place. That place that had a crowd and a line up. I am so coming back with my partner.

My opinion is unfortunately divided into two parts, because our experience differed greatly between two servers. At the start of the evening, we were served by an enthusiastic young lady, who offered us several good alcohols to try. Honestly, if she had served us all evening, I would have easily given 5 stars for service.

Unfortunately, after 8 p.m. there seems to have been a change of staff. I won't point fingers at anyone, but here are the facts that prompt me to write this post. After the change, I finished my drink and waited 20 minutes to get the waiter's attention, without success. He passed by to serve another group right next to us before finally noticing us. His first instinct was to ask us if we wanted to pay, even though we had not indicated anything on the subject.

When ordering another drink, while I was chatting with my partner, he took his glass of whiskey half full, without her indicating that she had finished her drink. As she spoke to me, she couldn't see that he was reaching for his drink. Worse still, he didn't even check if she had finished her drink. Paying $20 for a barely started glass of whiskey, only to have it taken, demonstrates a glaring lack of professionalism. This adds to very slow service and a complete lack of friendliness. The only time he was quick was when it came to paying the bill. Even worse, the couple sitting next to us were completely ignored by this same server. I sincerely hope this was due to lack of experience. Having heard good comments about this establishment, I must admit to being disappointed with my experience.

Great speakeasy. Love the bar design and staff was quick to notice when you might want to order another round. Drinks were well balanced.

Great atmosphere. Good cocktails. And you can’t go wrong with some Japanese whisky, of which there are several to choose. Entrance is the black door just next to Patati Patata and then down the hallway to the room with lots of candles and a serpentine bar. Clever use of a mirrored wall increases the effect of the candles. Clever use of magnets allow them to hang Japanese whiskey bottles that patrons reserve over the bar. Magnets also allow placement of the gas powered candles at different places on the bar. Great design. Friendly service.

If you're in Montreal and looking for a truly unique experience, Big in Japan is a must-visit speakeasy that stands out. The ambiance is charmingly quaint with its low lighting and super relaxed vibe, creating an intimate and inviting atmosphere. The seating is incredibly unique, adding to the overall distinctive feel of the place. The drinks are nothing short of amazing, expertly crafted and full of flavor. Service here is impeccable, with staff that are attentive and friendly, making you feel right at home. The atmosphere has a way of transporting you to a different country, offering an escape from the everyday. Highly recommended for a memorable night out!
