Pho Bac 97 has always been one of my favorite spots whenever I visit Montreal. It is right in Chinatown, which made it really easy to get to since our hotel was only a few minutes away.
The people here are honestly the best part. The owner, the male staff, and Hannah were so sweet and welcoming. They made us feel at home right away and it’s clear they can connect with anyone because they switch so easily between English, French, Vietnamese, Chinese, and probably even more languages. That kind of warmth really makes a difference.
We ordered two Pho Dac Biet XL bowls and one Bi Cuon roll, and with taxes and tip it came to around $50 for the two of us. The food was comforting, flavorful, and authentic. As someone who is part Vietnamese, I really appreciate when a restaurant captures those traditional flavors, and this one absolutely does. At the end they even gave us fortune cookies, which was such a simple but thoughtful little touch.
I’ll be honest, there is a strong smell around the bathroom area that can be a bit distracting, maybe from the age of the building or cleaning issues, but it didn’t take away from how kindly we were treated.
I still want to give five stars because this place feels special to me and the staff treat you like family. Thank you again for such a lovely experience. Sending love from Candy and family from Toronto. 😋🍜

It smells like sewers, we walked out. All the tables were so dirty and sticky
Today was a crowded day, usually my friends would eat there if we are in China town cause it’s just that good, but today, the server was extremely rude to us for some reason: he acknowledged us 3 times but didn’t came take our orders, served somewhat late and worst of all, when we paid (cash only) we gave 50cents, what we usually gave and they complained about the small amount and called us shameless. But here’s the twist: some of us are not even teens, so it’s clearly hate towards younger generation. So if you go there, look at least older and intimidating and tip like 30% or they’ll roar at you.

Three old men operate this restaurant. The noodles are so hard, spring rolls are so oily. My extra large has much less noodles than the other guy besides me…. One of the worst pho I’d ever had!

Just came back from my trip to Montreal. This place is sooooo good! I went twice within two days.
Super friendly staff and amazing service. My food came in under 5-10 minutes (almost too fast hehe).
Pho is my favorite noodle dish. Simple and tasty and the broth hits the spot and soothes the stomach.
If you are in town, I highly recommend this place.
Merci beaucoup and shout out to Pho Bac and the amazing people who run it. You are a blessing not only in Montreal, but in Canada. 🙂👍

I ordered the extra-large pho, but the portion was very small, much less than what I would expect for an XL. I noticed the customer at the next table ordered the same size and received a much larger portion. It felt like unfair treatment, possibly because we don’t speak French. Very disappointing experience.

Only when meeting someone you don’t know well ,you will take him to a restaurant with a decent environment and exquisite dishes.
Only when meeting a friend you really get along with , you will take him to a small restaurant hidden in the street.

Restaurantji Recommends
I support for Vietnamese food as the restaurant keeps the reasonable price. They have veggie dishes if you don't eat meat. The service is quite satisfied, friendly.

Really wanted to like this place because the workers were so nice but the food is just not up to par. We ordered pho and also a dried vermicelli dish and both were very disappointing, it’s probably one of the worst Vietnamese restaurants Ive ever been to taste wise. The pho broth was not bad but the meat was colourless and chewy. As for the dried vermicelli, it was served without the usual fish sauce (which we later found out was supposed to come with the order), but even without it, the noodles were extremely dry and bunched up, and the chicken was so dry it was borderline like jerky. The spring roll was also very greasy and pretty much only had carrots as the filling, we were hungry but couldn’t finish the food.

A little too rundown. Rice noodle soup was not that good. Had better in other Pho restaurants with similar rating. Grilled chicken didn't really have much flavour.
My favorite restaurant. Simply the best.
