First time there was 11/22/2025. I can't find anything to complain about. Service great. Food great. Atmosphere great. I requested a particular brand of scotch. They were out, ok no big deal. The hostess went down the road and got a bottle for me. Who does that. I will rate this place as exceptional. Not fancy but truly off the charts great.

My husband and I decided to have dinner here on Halloween. The restaurant is in an historic tavern and stories of paranormal activity adds to its charm. I called to make reservations for 5:30 at 1:35 which was never recorded. Luckily it was not busy and we got right in. Our server was lovely and very attentive, possessing every quality needed for a great dining experience. The food fell short of providing that great dining experience. My husband ordered the large prime rib medium rare. He could barely cut into the meat. It did not lack in flavor but it appeared to be old meat heated up. Generous size cut but very tough to chew and definitely on the over cooked side. I had baked stuff shrimp and ate two of the four shrimp. Something was off in the taste and I stopped eating. We did explain (and showed) to our server how tough the meat was to cut but neglected to mention the shrimp dish. She did not charge us for the prime rib ($40) which was totally unexpected and extremely appreciated. As I am writing this, I am having waves of stomach cramps and hoping it will pass by morning. Their menu offers some great dinner options and we are willing to give it another try. It was hopefully just an off night.

This was a second time since the new management took over. The menu is much smaller than before but you are sure to find something you will like. We ate in the dinning room that hasn’t changed at all. It kept its quaint appeal. We ordered seafood and prime rib. All the food was cooked well and seasoned perfectly to our taste. Our server was very attentive. Overall experience the food was great staff was young and friendly!
VERY DISAPPOINTED!! Tavern on Main has been our go to for years and we always loved it. Today's visit changed that for good. Most definitely will not be going back. This was our first time there since the change of mgmt. and couldn't have been more disappointed. I ordered the fried haddock and was unable to eat most of it due to it being FULL of bones! The peas were cold, and as for the baked potato, it was also cold and most of the inside of the potato was brown. My husband ordered a seafood dish which also arrived lukewarm at best. We ordered a cup of N.E. clam chowder as well which was basically a cup of floured milk with a few potatoes and clams and the flavor was extremely lacking. I mentioned the issue of the bones in the fish to our server (who was the only good part of our visit) and he said he was going back to inform the kitchen only to come back out with our bill and put it on the table. I had not asked for a discount on the bill (although it should have been immediately offered) and there was also no offer to remove the charge for the fish dinner. The manager couldn't even be bothered to come out to our table to talk to us. The restaurant was NOT busy at all so no excuse. This was rude and showed only to be completely unapologetic and insensitive to the issue. Sadly, this historic and once wonderful restaurant is not even close to what it once was.👎

Chepachet's historic charm is perfectly complemented by this must-visit spot. The building itself is full of character, and the dining experience lives up to its setting. I can't recommend the surf and turf enough—it was not only excellent but also reasonably priced. A standout feature for me was the self-serve bread station, which I thought was a nice touch. The service was exceptional; my drink was never empty, and the staff was incredibly attentive.

My husband and I won a gift certificate to Tavern on Main, and we decided to go last night and try it out. What a great time we had. Mike was our server and what an amazing one he was! The tavern made a great choice when they hired Mike!
We inquired about the ghostly history of the restaurant built in the 1700’s, and as busy as it was last night, Mike took the time to speak with us, and invite us back to share one of the three days they will be hosting a ghost dinner complete with a host who will be sharing the history of this amazing place.
Thank you Mike, and thank you Tavern on Main! The food was fantastic! I had the baked stuffed shrimp, and my husband had the surf and turf! I had a taste of the steak, and it was seasoned to perfection. As for my stuffed shrimp, I found large pieces of lobster in the stuffing and it was the best I’ve ever had!

4 stars but room for improvement.
The food has been wonderful. Salads a bit on the smaller side, but the house dressing was tasty. The main portions have been amazing but side sides have not been anything to brag about.
The furniture was falling apart, BUT it is old. They forgot my drink for a long while I had to ask again. The pot roast came out cold in some spots...
The environment is awsome to look at BUT could be spruce up somehow... and the music in dining room was sooo loud i really noticed it...
Good location. Historical building. Good desert and prime rib.

Tavern on Main in Chepachet looks like a classic colonial inn from the outside, but inside it carries a reputation as one of Rhode Island’s most haunted gathering spots. Locals and visitors alike have told stories of unexplained happenings for generations.
Built in the early 1700s, the tavern gained fame during Dorr’s Rebellion of 1842, when militia troops fired on its door and later occupied the building. That turbulent summer is only part of its history, but many believe the echoes of those conflicts remain. Staff and guests have reported sudden chills, glasses breaking on their own, and figures vanishing in plain sight.
Some say the spirit of reformer Thomas Dorr himself still lingers here, while others point to Jedediah Sprague, an early tavernkeeper, or even “Alice,” a ghostly woman said to appear in a back booth. Whether legend or reality, the haunted tales of Tavern on Main have made it a fixture not just of Chepachet’s history, but of New England ghost lore as well. #Chepachet #RhodeIslandHistory #HauntedNewEngland #TavernOnMain #GhostStories
