Westerly, RI is my happy place. I live as a Nomad, full time in a van, and there are some places that are just really special, Westerly, RI is that place for me. My Rodina, like the Russians like to refer to when speaking of the place that grounds them and brings them peace. On 12 Canal Street, in Downtown Westerly, RI is a nice quiet night spot, with good food, good drinks and a great Bartender, named Jessica. This is not a place where you have to be in a rush, The owners, Paul and Pat, welcome good discussion over fine cocktails. On Friday evenings , a very interesting musician, Dr. Westchesterson, livens up the atmosphere with his awesome array of popular covers, including my favorite, Pink Floyd. The Bar here is a great place for conversation, and for meeting some of the local business owners as well, in this beautiful town on the border with Connecticut. The Food here is always great. Nothing but good things to say about Bird in hand. Great Atmosphere and great bartending are next level .

Easy parking in back. Exquisite decor is easy and relaxing. Great people and atmosphere. Excellent food and they are accommodating with the menu. We went for brunch and had the whole place to ourselves. Undiscovered gem. (for now)

On a busy Summer Saturday night in Westerly, we were surprised to get into any restaurant without a reservation for a party of 6. When we arrived at 730 there were only three other tables occupied in another wise upscale nice atmosphere. This should have been our first and second clues to the impending doom. The waiter confused our orders and wasn’t familiar with the menu. He came back a few times. About an hour later he came back and apologized that the kitchen was a little “backed up.” By that time the place had thinned down to just our table and one other. Our dinners eventually arrived one by one, except for the chicken on one of the salads. By the time the chicken arrived the rest of the party had finished eating their meals and we were the only remaining table in the restaurant. The waiter then promptly arrived immediately after the chicken to inform us that the kitchen was closing and that if we wanted to order desserts we needed to do so quickly. Instead of inconveniencing the kitchen we decided to draw an unhappy end to a dreadful night of service. Sad, the food and wine were decent, but with the poor service this new establishment in Westerly will unlikely make it past September. As we drove home through Westerly, the other restaurants in town were still quite busy. Apparently, we weren’t the first to witness that The Bird in Hand had “fouled its own nest” through poor service.

The food was surprisingly tasty. We got the spring rolls, wings, linguini, swordfish, gumbo, and the peach salad. Each dish was delicious. The chairs are very uncomfortable and the service was subpar.

Went for brunch which was very good. Also great service and a beautiful setting. There is outdoor seating which is very pleasant, weather permitting.

We arrived for brunch and first thing we noticed was the beautiful decor. Soft green and gold colors with comfortable seating spaced far enough away from your neighbor to give you room for private conversations.
Lobster quiche was on special and we both ordered the same. it came with a nice arugula salad. Big chunks of lobster in a flaky crust. Outstanding. I look forward to returning for dinner!

Parking: Adequate parking in the back of the building

I'll start with the good. the interior is clean and calm, with lovely artwork. There is a parking lot in the rear. Staff was friendly. Unfortunately, That was not enough to make me go back. it took approx. 35 minutes to get our appetizer of 4 grilled oysters ($19), which were very garlicky. A little over an hour after ordering, a waitress asked what we were waiting for. We were told the dup was misplaced (hah!). When our food did finally arrive, the gumbo ($32) was bland and my oyster po-boy had 2 pieces of shell hiding in it. Management did do the right thing- they comped our entrees. We were very disappointed. It is the same owners as the sandwich shop in Watch Hill, which is great, so we had high hopes. They have been open since the winter, so kinks should have already been worked out. A sad disappointment.

Everyone in the group loved their meals which included a lobster roll, crab cakes, delicious salads and child’s pasta. The server was so thoughtful.

Great place for a drink. We went this past Friday at 7:30 - reserved over 2 weeks ago.
The server was very sweet BUT - Upon arrival, we received extensive beer, wine and cocktail menu only to be told the only beer available were the first 2 listed from a list of approximately 10. We were also advised at that time that there was no duck or roast chicken and many other entrees that were unavailable (so much for the bird). We ordered a gumbo and 3 Steak Au Poivre. After approx. 20 minutes, our server returned to tell us that they only had 2 steaks but had a panko coated chicken breast. The chicken breast was dryer that jerky. My steak was tough and was served with french fries with paprika or some other terrible tasting powder on them. My son enjoyed his steak. The gumbo wreaked havoc on my husbands stomach.

We had great hopes for this restaurant but most likely will only return for a cocktail.

I gave overall 2 stars mainly for the atmosphere.

Parking: Free municipal parking lot is down the hill - convenient.

Beautifully decorated space with a menu that has a little something for everyone... to that note our only issue was that some menu items were not available which we felt should have been communicated as we sat down (rather than after trying to order something that was not available). But the food we ended up ordering, we LOVED, the music was great, vibes are nice, bartender a bit distracted with friends visiting but very nice anyway—we will happily return.

Food was delicious and surprisingly well paired!! Recommend the winter salad & swordfish with risotto and the pork chop was perfectly prepared! Pajaro (Teqilla) drink was great!

New place with nice outdoor patio and lots of easy parking in downtown Westerly.

Really enjoyed the comfortable seats and lovely fresh decor. Service was attentive, accommodating, and friendly - I hope you get Ryan as your server!!!

Really recommend this place for wonderful french inspired food and ambiance.
