If you’re celebrating a special occasion, I would not recommend Church & Union. Instead, try Southbound or SNOB where they offer complimentary champagne or dessert. My boyfriend and I came here for our anniversary, which was noted on our reservation, and it was a very disappointing experience. There was no acknowledgment of the occasion.Despite booking the reservation months in advance, we were seated in the side room closest to the bathrooms. I was looking forward to the stunning church interior, which may be one of the only positive things about this restaurant.Service was “meh” and the food was awful. The steak and tartare were okay. The brussel sprouts were cold and mushy. The potatoes were oddly sweet (and not in a good way). The steak was served with a barbecue sauce that tasted exactly like a McDonald’s sauce. The ravioli tasted like a doughy potato gnocchi with sauce from a can.I can normally finish a meal at a mediocre restaurant, but this food was not even appetizing.A very pricey and disappointing experience. I will not be back.

I had high hopes and excitement for visiting this place after recommendations from friends who had been before. However, despite arriving a little early for our reserved table, we ended up waiting an additional 15 minutes past our reservation time due to the restaurant being very busy. The servers were apologetic and friendly, but we were then seated in a side room that lacked the appeal of the restaurant's unique features, being a converted church. Additionally, there were no dietary options for vegans, which left one of our party hungry. I'm sure the experience is 5-star for those without dietary restrictions, but we were a little underwhelmed, unfortunately. The staff were great, and we hope others have a wonderful time.

Hooo boy where to start. If you want boring food, bad service, and a hyped but poor atmosphere, this spot is for you.The food and drinks were mediocre at best and painfully bland. Not a single thing shined of everything we tried. Nothing was "bad", but it was woefully under seasoned and typically had one flavor dominate. The service however was bad. Our server was constantly checking on us but kept missing things that we either asked for or she said she would be bringing. Dishes were forgotten and were not brought even after notifying her of it. Every interaction ended with her saying "Thank you" multiple times to us where it became a running joke for us during our dinner.Even after she could tell the experience was going south and our card was on the table, she took several trips telling us she would be back with the check each time but failing to do so. A manager stopped by and asked us how everything went and we responded with "meh" and "ok" and he promptly moved on as if we had given him a thumbs up.We thought the church atmosphere would be cool at least. Not so since we were off in a side room at a table directly in the path of everyone walking to the bathroom. No sound absorbtion led to an incredibly loud environment too.All these added up to a sub-par experience that will leave us never recommending this place to anyone when there are so many better options in Charleston.

Popped in for drinks. Bar seems efficient, but one of the few specialty cocktails on the menu (The Ghost) was disappointing. Why use cayenne when you could do a salted rim with chili pepper flakes? Atmosphere is energetic & loud.

Gonna give this place a solid “meh”. $50 for a carbonized steak seems a bit much. Plus, it took ten minutes to get a steak knife to cut it. Also, very, very loud. Do not go there thinking you’ll be able to have a conversation with anyone on the other side of the table from you. Go elsewhere if you want a quality dining experience. This place is more like a glorified Chili’s.
