Really disappointed with the service here for the price and size of the room. There is no safe, no fridge, no closet, 2 hangers, and the list doesn’t end there. No one seems to enjoy working here. Asked for a few small things to the room (napkins, more hangers, and one more robe) and they refused to do all because room service was closed (it was 9pm, we had a 8 hour drive) or other excuses.

Overall really disappointed

The Ryder hotel has very nice rooms and amenities but due to billing issues, it has been the worst experience ever. We were charged every night we stayed (& never was told) - also given a final bill at checkout, then a few days later was told that wasn’t the final bill. We left over 5 days ago and are still getting charged daily. My husband also called the hotel regarding these issues and did not have a friendly experience. This was also for our honeymoon, safe to say I would never stay here again or recommend it for friends or family.

We were super excited for our trip to Charleston and decided to pay extra for a wonderful hotel. We are not high maintenance guests and have both worked in the hospitality industry so we understand that giving grace is very important. Although the hotel was nice on the surface, we were disappointed by many things. We had two gentleman at the front desk who were amazing and we felt went above and beyond for all the guests (they were always laughing and being extra helpful to anyone who walked in the door). The two girls at the coffee shop were also amazing! Besides that, the staff were not overly friendly and made us feel like an inconvenience. We were most excited about the pool! They said the pool was not open to the public but it was PACKED with people every day. So much so that we couldn't even find a spot to get into it. We later looked online and realized that you could buy a resort pass, so although we were spending a lot of money on this hotel and its amenities, we were fighting for a spot at the pool with people who weren't even staying there. When we arrived, we also had to pay a hefty amenity fee that we did not know about along with a $53 a day valet for parking. They said we could park down the block at the parking garage but it was full and kind of sketchy. The advertisement online also was not accurate. They showed photos of a nice gym, only to be told it didn't actually exist at the hotel but 4 blocks away at their sister location. So at this point, the pool was shared by the public, the gym didn't exist, and there were extra fees around every corner. The rooms were nice and very clean but the AC was set at 72 degrees! It would not let you change it either. We went with friends and their room was the exact same regarding the AC, keep in mind...it was 90+ degrees everyday so the rooms were super hot and humid. When our friends called the front desk about it, they sent up a fan with mold all over it! When we called, they said they would send maintenance up to fix it and they never showed. The next day, we called again and they came at a random time. I told them my husband was showering and to come back in 10 minutes...they never came back.

It was a pretty hotel and the location was great, but what they advertised was not necessarily the case. We saved up for this trip and felt sad about our experience. We could have stayed at the Hotel Bennet with the amount of money we paid...

I stayed at The Ryder Hotel in July 2025. The room itself was great — stylish, cozy, and clean. I really liked the interior and overall vibe inside the room.

However, my overall stay was stressful and disappointing.

▶️ Security incident:
Around midnight, a hotel staff member opened my room door without knocking, while I was alone in bed. I was extremely shaken. Later, they told my partner over the phone that there was a system issue, and that my room was allegedly showing as “unoccupied” in their system.

They apologized and offered a partial refund for the night and parking — which I appreciated — but it still doesn’t change how unsafe I felt. I’m a solo female traveler, and it was a really disturbing experience.

▶️ Pool area:
Very different from the online photos.
• The pool is small, crowded, and doesn’t feel clean
• The lounge chairs were stained and visibly dirty
• There was trash under and around the chairs and tables (see photos)

▶️ Refund process was unclear:
I booked using Chase Travel Points, but they said the refund would come as a credit to my Expedia account, even though I didn’t book through Expedia directly. Still not sure how or if that will work.

Sadly, I wouldn’t stay here again or recommend it — especially for solo travelers.

Update: Hotel management reached out, took responsibility, apologized, and issued a full refund. I appreciate that they handled it professionally.

We stayed at the Ryder Hotel in Charleston as a family with two children (ages 12 and 14) and had a wonderful experience. The rooms are spacious, bright, and tastefully decorated, with a large and clean bathroom. The entire property is well-maintained, and the pool area was a big hit with the kids. The staff was consistently friendly and helpful. Another great plus is the location – everything worth seeing, as well as restaurants and shops, is within easy walking distance.
We can definitely recommend the Ryder Hotel.

They canceled our room without telling us!!!

We showed up with a confirmed reservation, only to be told our room had been canceled — and no one bothered to tell us. No call, no email...NOTHING!

Totally unacceptable. We were left scrambling to find another hotel at the last minute, which was stressful and expensive.

I expected way better. If you’re thinking about staying here, just know your reservation might not mean much.

Friendly staff and the food at little Palm bar was fantastic. Reasonable price for Downtown Charleston. Great location downtown!
