Amazing food, surprisingly good value as well. Impeccable service. The Half Chicken and Oyster Mushrooms are a must try.

The service was good. If you enjoy shared plates you will appreciate this menu. We were a group of 6 and after dinner we all agreed it was fine. No complaints and nothing that wowed us.

Naming your place ‘the grocery’ makes it very hard to find you on Google.

For the price, would forgo this restaurant. Very small portions, virtually no sides, and ambiance/ service below average. Bathroom light was out.. Had to refill our own wine. Not again. Much better options in Charleston for sure for dining.

Really need 6 stars for The Grocery. It was perfect from first sip to last bite. We tried several of the vegetables to start...the carrots were delicious but a close second to the shishito peppers. Or maybe it was the other way around. We were sent by our hosts at High Wire Distilling, so we had to try the High Tea cocktail which was outstanding . Entrees were cooked to our specifications and superb. Evan took great care of us. All in all, this is a go to for any occasion or just for a delicious bite.

Dinner took over 2 hrs to come out after appetizers. All appetizers were really small. The one entree sized non meat dish was so small and noodles with black eyed peas and so salty that it was not worth it

This establishment came highly recommended from a friend with very discerning culinary tastes - Eric Dumbleton, a Bay Area food critic who does not suffer fools. Ask the French Laundry! Suffice it to say - our experience at The Grocery was divine. The service was top notch - we were greeted warmly by the hostess. She engaged us in a heartfelt conversation while taking us to our table. Our server was both witty and more importantly very knowledgeable about the menu. Even staff who were not waiting on us made us feel special. As for the food - better than the Detroit Lions this season and that is saying a lot. We started with two vegetable dishes, both cooked in a wood fired oven and the flavor and texture of the carrots and squash were sublime. Our entree, a variation of a paella, a Lowcountry seafood pilau, made with an assortment of seafood and Carolina gold rice, was unlike anything else we have ever tasted. All of the ingredients stood out yet also together created the culinary equivalent of a seafood symphony. Kudos Kevin Johnson for providing us with an experience that we will cherish forever!

Scotty & Kaley are my two favorite bartenders in Charleston. This is hands down the best happy hour in Charleston. The Dirty Green Tomato Martini was actually voted as being one of the top 50 Martinis in the nation by Esquire magazine---which is seriously no small feat. Another great drink- the Ruby Slipper, is like a cross between an Aperol Spritz & a Paloma.. it is ultra refreshing! This is a true farm-to-table establishment which utilizes LOCAL producers and that is what makes this restaurant so special. I cannot recommend the Keegan Filion produced (pasture raised) Pork Milanese more.. or the amazing steak...with the FABulous potato gratin which is truly heaven in your mouth. This is a special place staffed with people who are super knowledgeable about the city of Charleston and this is a GREAT addition to your visit to this city. Add this to your itinerary- if you are a foodie like me then you will be pleased and you will see why it has a loyal following. This place is a GEM. HIGHLY recommend ! 10/10

TLDR: rude management, slow/overworked service (bartender was our waiter), decent food, smoke filled restaurants. If we didn’t have such a horrible experience waiting for our food and talking to management, I’d give it a 3.

Visiting as a group of 10, I obviously understand service is going to be slower and more annoying for everyone involved but I didn’t force them to accept the reservation.

We arrived a few minutes early to our 8pm reservation and ordered a few drinks at the bar while they set our table. After we were seated, we didn’t get water or menus for at least 15 minutes. We were very understanding at this point when the bartender came over and apologized. Maybe 10 more minutes went by and we ordered all of our food. Now, again, I understand ordering as a group of 10 was complicated but it all seemed fine when she read it back to us. One of us is GF and another is vegan so there were some changes but mostly “cheese on the side,” nothing major. We ordered bread and when that still hadn’t come by 845/9, I inquired about the status. It came right away and we ordered another round immediately because we were so hungry. At 930, I asked where the rest of the food was and some of the apps/smaller plates arrived. By 10, the rest of the food had arrived (somethings were duplicated, some missing) and we were missing a MR steak. We had ordered two at two different temperatures then switched the temperature of one so I totally understand how this happened. However, when they were notified it was missing at 10 (PM!!!) it took them almost 20 minutes to bring another one. I am not a chef but 20 mins for a MR steak was a little crazy to us. Oh and then the second order of bread came with that lol.

One of my friends when to speak to the manager because of the issued we’d experienced (delays, duplicates, missing items) and was essentially told that she was a classless moron with no experience in the restaurant industry and the restaurant took no blame in anything that happened. Some of the exact words she spoke were, “this isn’t a fast casual restaurant,” “have you ever eaten at a nice restaurant before?,” and “we will not be comping anything since you ate the food.” I don’t know about you but if someone spoke to me that way, I’d have a hard time hearing them out.

After that, I made it very clear to the waitress that we in no way blamed her and would not be giving her a bad tip and she looked at me with tears in her eyes and told me she had just quit. Okay so clearly something was going on this whole time so we got the bill, left our waitress a cash tip (didn’t trust the management after that) and went on our way.

Like I said in the beginning, if we weren’t spoken to like that maybe it would have been 3-stars for the food and vibes but I can’t support a place that speaks to individuals like that.

My husband and I stopped in last night after a friend recommended this place to us. It was a packed Saturday night and we didn’t have a reservation, so the hostess offered us seats at the bar, which we gratefully accepted! The bar staff was very informative about the drinks and food offerings and even gave us some other restaurant suggestions in Charleston while we’re visiting. The only weird thing is a large, rowdy group came in and kind of crowded us and they were pretty rude to the staff. The bartenders handled the situation well and they ended up leaving so the rest of our dining experience was quiet. This isn’t the place for you if you’re looking for a wild night. But if you’re looking for a more elevated dining experience, you have to give this place a try. We’ll be back!

P.S. the roasted carrots are to die for!
