Excellent. We stopped in for some pastries and cookies. Everything was really, really good. Cinnamon twist, cardamom bun, good friend cookie, and a molasses. I would give 6 stars because they list allergens and it is a huge help. Service was friendly and fast.

The Harbinger is perfect in every single way but it does have one profound flaw. The coffee is immaculate and the baked goods are to die for. The Harbinger breakfast sandwich is for sure the best thing I’ve had in awhile. However, the atmosphere is less than impressive due to the dog overloaded atmosphere. I am a dog lover- I have my own- but when I go and grab a bite to eat, I leave them at home out of respect for others. This morning at the harbinger was already incredibly crowded and over stimulating, just to be exacerbated by the presence of 4 different, very clearly overstimulated dogs. One of the owners of these dogs had the audacity to ask for space. I think this is truly a recipe for disaster. I understand Charleston businesses need to appeal to a certain demographic of person (dog lovers) but spaces as small as this, where food is being served, should and need to be dog free. It’s not appetizing to watch dog hair and dander float around the room of the space you’re about to eat in. It’s also not fun to anticipate being potentially snapped at by an overwhelmed dog. Dogs belong at parks and recreational areas- not enclosed cafes.

Fabulous little cafe. Sister cafe to Harken downtown (also very sweet). I LOVED their breakfast sandwich and honey cookie. The coffee was good too (Americano).
Mix of students, locals in the neighborhood, visitors and families.
They have a lovely option to pay $5 for a local neighbor in need to get a free drink. I think this is an effort to acknowledge the gentrification and impact on the surrounding neighborhood.
My only warning is that the sitting space is not amenable to fat people and larger bodies or wheelchairs. The tables are attached to the floor with very little space between. Totally fine to order to go or to sit at the front counter, but not then back seating area.
Overall a great spot and would definitely go back!!

Listen I am all for supporting local, but I have been in 3 times to keep hoping it will get better and been disappointed everytime. Its like the only thing that keeps them open is proximity. Everything in there was burnt. The pastries were over cooked and dry. They were supposed to be lemon blueberry, I just tasted burnt butter. The espresso tasted like they over roasted the beans and havent cleaned their machine in months. Somehow the lavendar syrup tastes like cinnamon, why? I really keep trying, but it keeps getting worse. I cant decide if people don't know what good tastes like or its their only option, so they just accept the worsening conditions without complaints.

I’ve been going to Harbinger for 6 years, and can today say I had the best meal in Charleston here. While my partner and I regularly walk over for a chai or pastry, today we got the Brussel Caesar, Carrot Salad, Winter Caprese Sandwich & Spice Girl. To say it’s better than a dinner we had the night before (at a new Michelin star) is honestly an understatement. Every single flavor was perfect, our lattes were impeccably balanced, and the festive decor created the ultimate cozy vibe. I hope the amazing gals working behind the coffee counter & chef station get a well earned holiday thanks for the magic they make here every day.

This is some of the best coffee that I have ever had. The staff is always friendly. And the coffee is always fresh. Plus there is no additional charge for oat milk or almond milk. Love it!

A favorite place to work and grab a delicious snack and espresso or matcha drink. You may get a gen Z stare sometimes at the register, but don’t let is phase you. The grasshopper toast and a best friend cookie is highly recommended.

The coffee was wonderful, and most experiences I’ve had here have been wonderful. However, the cashier working the register this morning was needlessly sarcastic and rude toward my friend when he asked for caramel in his coffee, not knowing that wasn’t an option. He light heartedly suggested it could be an addition in the future to which she suggested he could make it himself.

Wonderful local cafe and bakery. A stunning array of amazing baked goods. Everything we tried was top-notch and the coffee was amazing too! Bigger than it looks from the front with indoor and outdoor seating. The staff kept things moving, so don't be scared off by a line.
Very popular spot for an eclectic vegan crowd. Pastries were excellent and the Harbinger breakfast sandwich was delightful.

I love the Harbinger because their cold brew gets me ZOOTED. My favorite treat is the Cha Cha Cha Chia, dense but soft and chewy bar with yummy frosting. I like trying their lunch trios. They change the lunch often and keep it interesting. The atmosphere is welcoming and I like their seating outside in the back. Parking is tricky in this area but always worth it. It’s a short walk from Habitat for Humanity, so it’s nice to grab a coffee and go thrift shopping!

I stopped by The Harbinger Café & Bakery and loved that they had a few dairy-free pastries and several milk options for drinks. I tried the coffee blueberry cake and it was absolutely delicious—moist, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. I also grabbed an oat peanut butter rice crispy treat, which was really good too—super filling and could easily work as a meal replacement, though a bit messy. The café has a cozy and charming vibe, but it’s a little cramped and tends to get busy, so seating can be tight. Overall, definitely worth visiting for the vegan-friendly pastries and good coffee options! Updated from previous review on 2025-11-01
