If you live in Charleston long enough, you know that good sushi is hard to come by. There is no better place for sushi in the Charleston area. I have been dining at and ordering sushi (pick-up) from Kanpai regularly for five years now. I am only sharing this secret as I am leaving the area and no longer need to gatekeep this wonder of the area. The restaurant is small, but the quality of the sushi reigns here. The dining atmosphere is a little like someone's home office on the inside. Aside from that, everything else is on point. They are a BYOB restaurant. The distance from my home, BYOB, and the convenience of a competing restaurant with slightly less quality food will be the things keeping me from making it a normal visit. Otherwise, this place will top my list for sushi.
Awesome food! Chef Sean choice sampler was some of the best sushi and sashimi I’ve ever had, a lot better than most I’ve personally experienced throughout Japan. Everything was impeccable from apps to mains. I’d definitely recommend the spicy truffle edamame, spicy tuna crispy rice, and the goyza dumplings are an absolute must to start.
