1885 had a delicious country fried steak, the best my husband has had in the area. My son's chicken strips were also very good. My grilled chicken sandwich was okay. It does not come with any sauce, and the chicken was thick enough it could have used some more of seasoning. The restaurant was quaint inside and bright and clean. It was a bit loud. The staff were friendly.

We found this reataurant in the charming town of Hill City. We love a good steak and thought that would be their specialty. Ironically, it was the worst part of the meal. The NY Strip was inedible because it was too chewy, not the wrong cook but a poor quality meat. We let pur waitress know and asked for a discount after not eating the steak. We received less than Half of a discount. Additionally, the loaded baked potatoe had been sitting too long after the cheese had melted. My butter did not even melt on it. Service was fine and the Shrimp appetizer with boom sauce was tasty. Overpriced for the inexperience of the cooking. We do not recommend this resraurant and will not be back.

The food is average and the prices are top tier. Not an establishment I would highly recommend.

First of all our waitress was EXCELLENT, so I wanted to leave a 5 star review just for her. The pre dinner salads and bread were amazing too. But for everything else we felt we way overpaid for what we got. Drinks and food were quite expensive and flavor and portions were just mediocre. My meal wasn't cooked right and had to be sent back, something I try at all costs to avoid, but it was dangerously raw. Also (to the owner), get some better lighting! Atmosphere is as important as the food and they had blinding bright whitish blue LED lights, very cool color. The owner needs to switch them out to a nice warm temperature so you can actually appreciate the warm woodsy style of the place, that would have been awesome otherwise. It felt like I was sitting in a warehouse with those lights. Again, staff was amazing, but food and atmosphere just weren't worth the price we paid.

Ordered a 12 oz ribeye, and they brought me what appeared to be a sirloin. They told me their butcher must not have cut it right. I told them a person orders a ribeye for the marbling and flavor, they did not offer any solution to the issue. Paid 55 dollars for a small sirloin with no fat, no taste and was not seasoned at all and most definitely was not a delicious ribeye I should have ate for dinner. Spent a hundred dollars on a steak, and potato skins for appetizer. Would NOT recommend eating a steak here. I did order a side salad with my steak which was very good with the good ranch dressing.

Fantastic meal! Chicken fried steak was the best I’ve ever had. Delicious warm bread with cinnamon butter. My partner had the Ribeye which was thinner than preferred but perfectly cooked. Great service and the young man who brought our food was attentive and kind. He was always clearing plates and bringing the next course like perfect clockwork and always with a friendly smile. Wish I could remember to ask his name to complement him to the manager. A little overpriced but we would definitely come back.

Rip off! Highway robbery! Perhaps my expectations were too high, as I work in the food industry, but things went from mediocre to ridiculous with the bill. I expect a $65 buffalo rib eye to be cooked properly to medium rare, as ordered and however much the walleye was, I expected it to be at least cooked.

The ribeye, was bland with no taste and not even reasonable seasoning. It was barely done to rare. They put it back on the flames and brought it back medium well and charred, so now the flavor was grill. The fish was sent back to be cooked.

Meanwhile 4 people drinking root beer were asked if they wanted refills, the waitress brought a carafe out, which refilled everyone ...once. Then she brought another ....no biggie... UNTIL the $12 CHARGE X 2!!!!! We were never informed that refills were $3 per person!!!!

We were already eating the higher dollar meals, but to be continually ridiculously charged for simple fountain soda, is robbery, imo ....the least they could do is TELL the consumer they are charging for drink refills.

The kid's hamburger was supposed to come with lettuce pickle and onion.....and came with None!!! Another $15 meal and not even a drink.

To add to insult of the bill, they tacked on an automatic 30% tip.

Not impressed, our $300 bill certainly was not worth it, it was a huge disappointment.

After waiting for a few minutes, I was told I could sit in the front waiting area since I was dining by myself. This would have been fine, however there was really no service. After I ordered, no one came to bring water, ask if I wanted another drink, or if everything was good. Had to get up to ask for mustard for my burger as well as the check. They also did not bring me any bread, which says is complementary after 3pm. To top it off the prices are pretty high. Expect to pay $15-$20 for cocktails. Caesar salad was very good, burger was decent. Expect to spend about $40 per person if getting a drink. I understand it was busy but then just don’t seat people where no one is going to serve.

The good ...our drinks, appetizer (a great bruschetta) and salads were all good. Service was very friendly and timely, so the night started out great. This created a favorable expectation for our four meals.
Unfortunately, those expectations were not met. Each of our entrees (salmon, ribs and two orders of grilled shrimp), as well as the sides (chef vegetables, fries and mashed potatoes X 2, since they ran out of baked potatoes) were so over salted to the point of being unable to eat. If it was one entree or side, it may have been an anomaly. However, it was actually each portion of four meals and sides.
Because all four meals were not satisfactory, it appeared the problem wasn't because of what we ordered. We decided there would be nothing to gain by complaining or returning the meals. We just chalked this evening up to a bad experience and moved on. If/when we returned to Hill City, we would avoid the 1885 Steakhouse.
