The atmosphere and service were so promising; it’s a cute country home with a very friendly staff. I thought for sure the food just had to be amazing based on first impressions walking into Barbara’s. The yeast rolls for the table are really special (they actually remind me of my Nana’s homemade bread). However, the sides were disappointing. Very bland turnip greens and liquidy macaroni and cheese. Reminded me of an old folk’s home cafeteria - brothy/soupy without flavor....
This is 5-stars all around because of what it is - that classic home-cooking, meat-and-three. No frills, no pretensions, no marketing. The food is very good. Staff was very nice. Catfish on Fridays. My fried pork chop was home cooking perfection.
I had the poppyseed chicken with mashed potatoes and mac & cheese. The rolls and poppyseed chicken were delightful. However, the mac & cheese reminded me of Stouffers in the frozen isle and the mashed potatoes & gravy were bland. This was the consensus with my group. The main course was good but the sides were subpar.
