Place wasn't open when it was supposed to be
This place is great, I remember going here as a kid with my parents and for school field trips and events, but i had been in a while until today. There is a lot of neat stuff to see and l learn about. The guy working w is very knowledgeable. If you are visiting and have time, stop by and take a look. And if you live in Memphis at some point, you should visit and look around.
Place was closed. Doors locked, lights off. No signs indicating a reason. A sign in the lobby building had hours listed but they're not correct. We hung around for a minute to see if anyone showed up and asked a couple people asking by but nobody had any answers.
We were there for a special event. The facilities were nice, clean and comfortable.
This place is never open. The last time I saw this place actually open was 20 years ago when it was on Beale. It was a very cool place to check out. Now they list hours as open but seemingly never are. I used to work in that building. Never saw them open. Randomly went there to check it out and it was never randomly open when I went to visit. Drive an hour, pay to park, walk through crime village just to find businesses closed.Downtown is LAME and dangerous. When you have a 1 in 20 chance of being robbed or murdered in broad daylight, and you only see 15 other people, and half of them are derelicts, you are at high risk of being the next victim of violent crime in downtown Memphis. Some dude tried to rob Walt downtown but Walt talked his way out of being robbed. As the robber was leaving, the robber told Walt, "OK! Be safe out here!"I absolutely encourage everyone to AVOID MEMPHIS and especially downtown.WELCOME TO ONE STAR MEMPHIS.
I was there today, Friday, at 11:20am during their posted hours. Gate completely shut. So ya. They SUCK
Great eclectic place with so much art, music, and historical information. Many unusual and hard to find CDs and outsider artists. The owner is so knowledgeable and had great stories and insight on Memphis and beyond. The Center for Southern Folklore is in the same building as the Belz Museum at the end of the wide hallway.
Great little museum

An opportunity to learn a bit about Memphis, Southern Folklore....and a chance to take a bit of that home with you (local art pieces, posters, shirts, etc.)
We have been travelling from Washington to Houston and stumbled upon a wonderful group of dedicated volunteers that are promoting local music. I am an advocate of this type of promotion of local talent that seems to have been lost in recent times. I urge all to encourage upcoming performers in your local area.

We are doing some work for Judy Peiser and I was introduced to her. She is a hoot, what a great soul. I hope we can take care of her the way she has taken care of Memphis heritage.
