My wife and I visited Mortimer's on a Monday night to take advantage of their prime rib special, priced at $29.95. We were looking forward to an affordable yet satisfying dinner out.
Atmosphere and Service
The restaurant occupies an older building that's been well-maintained over the years. Parking can be tight in the small asphalt lot directly adjacent to the restaurant, but there's additional gravel parking available across the street that seems adequate for most evenings. Upon entering, guests walk through the bar area before reaching the hostess station.
Our server was the highlight of the evening—friendly, attentive, and professional despite being visibly busy with multiple tables. Her excellent service made the experience much more pleasant than it otherwise would have been.
The Food
The prime rib special includes a salad, one side dish, and rolls. We both selected loaded baked potatoes as our side, which were properly cooked and well-prepared. The salad, though slightly watery, was fresh with flavorful dressing options. The dinner rolls were a nice touch.
Unfortunately, the prime rib itself was disappointing. Despite ordering medium rare, both portions arrived with very little pink and were noticeably overcooked. The meat wasn't tough, but it lacked the tenderness you'd expect from quality prime rib. Most concerning was the excessive saltiness—the meat was so overseasoned it was nearly inedible. I found that dipping it in sour cream from the baked potato made it tolerable, but certainly not enjoyable. The portion size was modest but reasonable for the price point.
Overall Experience
While our server's excellent service prevented the evening from being a complete disappointment, the quality of the main course left much to be desired. I ended up leaving most of the prime rib untouched.
I won't be returning to Mortimer's, and I'd strongly advise others to skip the prime rib special. However, given the pleasant atmosphere and quality service, other menu items might offer a better experience for future diners willing to give the restaurant a chance.

I have been eating here for 35 years. Usually just for lunch, but I have never had a dish to return until today. Food is amazing however, use real catfish, drop the imported stuff. I'm still a huge fan!

Very good food, including some Knickerbocker items. Great service. Great atmosphere. The primary bartender has been there for many years and is fantastic! I love to go here, either for a meal or to hang out at the bar.

This place is severely overpriced for what it is. We started with a cfawfish dip appetizer that was obviously microwaved because of the taste, consistency, temperature, and speed at which it came out. It wasn't great.

The green salad was wilted lettuce with some carrot strips and a couple of cherry tomatoes.

The snapper pontchartrain was overcooked and overseasoned. The shrimp topping was just the super cheap precooked salad shrimp you can get at Walmart.

The atmosphere was bad. There's a really weird smell when you walk in. You enter through the bar and kind of have to squeeze last people drinking, which is obviously the main attraction of this place. The dining area feels cheap and a half step up from a manufactured building. They had newsmax propaganda on the TV.

Never again.
