Small space and long wait should be the name of this place. Hostess just said wait please after telling her how many in or party (2) and proceeded to stand there on her phone. Waiting for food didn't take as long, probably because it tasted like nothing and not worth it. The store next door is selling things that are almost expired and shouldn't be, just a bad experience overall

Sonobana, formally known as Benkay, is my favorite restaurant in the world. 30 years ago, a few weeks after I was born, the first place my parents took me outside of home was Benkay. I have been going and eating here ever since. May it be a bias conceived in my upbringing eating at Sonobana, or something else, I believe Sonobana is one of the best restaurants in the world. If you asked Gordon Ramsey, he would probably tell you there are too many items on the menu at Sonobana. However I have had every item, and nearly all of them are exquisite. I am fortunate to have traveled more and eaten more good food than many people my age, yet I stand by my statement; this place is one of the best. I am sure if you read the negative reviews on here it'll be about the wait/slower service, even when restaurant isn't full. This place wasn't always this busy. Only recently, within the last year or two, has the secret gotten out that this place serves pristine food. But just as the recipes or quality haven't changed for the last 30 years, the restaurant feels no need twist out of shape to conform to a needier, less respectful, and impatient customer base. Now there is consistently a 30min wait, and food of this diversity+quality takes time. So it feels fitting. I personally don't think anyone not willing to wait 30min should eat here anyways. Sonobana isn't going to hire an army of people and expand its seating just to see how fast it can get customers in and out like some Nashville hot chicken place focused on profits. This isn't a quick meal you get on your lunch break. Come here if you have both the time and capacity to appreciate it. This restaurant is about the honor that comes with serving consistently incredible Japanese cuisine.

Sachiko took great care of us. It was very busy but she made sure we always had everything we needed. We had the veggie spring rolls and beef gyoza to start. Both were incredible. The spring rolls had a perfect gentle crunch and the flavor was amazing as well. I had the Nashville Roll and Snow Crab Roll. While I thoroughly enjoyed both, the Nashville roll was one of the best sushi rolls I've had in the city. The Salmon was beautifully prepared and I don't think I've found it this fresh anywhere else. Lastly we had some green tea ice cream. Perfect again.
The temperature wasn't too hot or too cold. Every seat in the house was full, but it never got too loud. I can't say enough good things about this place, you'll have to visit for yourself.

Delightful and delicious! Best sushi I have had in Nashville and we live in East Nashville where there are a lot of competitive local restaurants. Atmosphere was great- with how busy it was it was never too loud and everyone there was obviously having a great time. The service was quick and fun- Sachiko was our waitress and she was a delight! And the prices- you can’t beat these prices!! Highly recommend this place to anyone who love good food, good sushi and great prices.
While in Nashville for a concert we found this gem. Our visit was authentic, delicious and so fun. We ordered WAY too much to try everything. Excellent quality sashimi/rolls. Bento boxes were perfect, green tea was lovely, fried ice cream was so yummy. Our spoons were arguing. :) our waitress was so wonderful too, I wish I had my receipt, she was petite with long brunette hair and eyeliner, we visited for lunch on 7/17/18. Thank you to whomever waited on the mom/daughter duo ordering everything. You made our lunch perfect!!!!! If you are in Nashville, eat here! It's small, but worth the wait! Also the shop next store is great! We will be back to both!!!!
