Tucked away in the charming town of Ooltewah, Tennessee, Whistlestop Cafe is a hidden gem that feels like a nostalgic nod to simpler times—complete with a train-themed vibe that had us grinning from the moment we stepped inside. On a recent visit, we were on a mission for dessert indulgence, and this spot delivered in spades. We ordered the classic banana split and the indulgent peanut butter brownie, and let me tell you, it was a match made in sugar heaven.
The service was nothing short of stellar. Our server, with a warm Southern smile and encyclopedic knowledge of the menu, made us feel like regulars despite it being our first time. She anticipated our every need—refilling waters before they hit empty and sharing fun facts about the cafe's history without missing a beat. It's the kind of attentive, genuine hospitality that turns a quick treat into a memorable outing.
Now, onto the stars of the show: the food. The banana split was a towering masterpiece of fresh vanilla ice cream scooped generously over ripe banana halves, crowned with whipped cream, maraschino cherries, and a drizzle of chocolate and strawberry sauces that swirled like a candy-striped dream. Every bite was a perfect balance of creamy, fruity, and crunchy (thanks to those toasted nuts), evoking childhood summers without the sticky mess. The peanut butter brownie, oh man—dense, fudgy chocolate layered with silky peanut butter swirls, served warm with a scoop of vanilla on the side. It was rich enough to satisfy any chocolate-peanut butter craving but not so heavy that we regretted the extra forkfuls. What elevated both dishes was the presentation: vibrant, Instagram-worthy plating that made them look as delicious as they tasted. Whipped cream piped with precision, sauces artfully zigzagged—it's clear the kitchen takes pride in the details.
But the real magic? The cafe's location right by the tracks. Midway through our desserts, a freight train rumbled by, its whistle piercing the air like a siren's call. We paused, spoons in hand, to watch it thunder past the window, adding an unexpected thrill to our sweet escape. It was the cherry on top—literally and figuratively.
If you're in the Chattanooga area craving desserts that hit all the senses, make the detour to Whistlestop Cafe. It's affordable (our bill came to under $20 for two massive portions), family-friendly, and utterly delightful. Five stars— we'll be back for the full menu next time!

It was really nice! They give you a lot of ice cream and the train passed by twice
Our server was super friendly and the shakes were huge! Would definitely recommend! Be prepared to bring your sweet tooth!
We recently watched the movie fried green tomatoes and my fiancé surprised me by taking me to this place! This place was the cutest spot! The staff were exceptional people and super friendly. Don’t even get me started on the food. TO DIE FOR. You have to try the fried green tomatoes of course. They have putput golf, memorabilia, and not to mention the train that runs right by it making it feel nostalgic.. oh and also giant milkshakes. What’s not to love?

I got the Nashville hot ckn sandwich. It was a little overcooked, so a little dry. It was tasty though. The start is the milkshakes. I think I'm still full from it and I only had half of one!
