Chose our last ATX meal, before heading back to Houston, to be at Austin Java. My guy got the Chicken and Waffles, and I got the Avocado Toast. Thinking about how big an Avocado Toast tends to be, I threw on a breakfast biscuit Sammy. OK, they just shamed First Watch, and La La Land with their Avocado Toast. The portion was huge! The ciabatta was beautifully made. This had pesto, and a subtly sweet tomato jam on it. It is then topped with queso fresco, bacon, and blistered cherry tomatoes. About that bacon: every bit was crunchy. The small detail of chopping the bacon prior to cooking ensured that every piece is crispy, much like the highly sought after corner piece of brownie. I added a side of Hollandaise for the poached egg. I had already promised my guy one of the four pieces. A decision I reluctantly followed through with. Five of of five stars, would demolish again. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A last refuge of old Austin, nestled away on Manchaca. Austin Java used to be everywhere with one under City Hall and one as far out as Dripping Springs brandishing signs for their “world famous” African Peanut Soup.

The food is solid with a wide variety for a coffee spot. From snacks to full meals for breakfast and lunch ranging from the healthiest of choices to your decadent favorites along with as varied of a drinks selection from choices for a boozy brunch to an assortment of coffees and teas to my personal favorite, the smoothies.

As places like Kerbey Lane continue their steady downward trend, Austin Java reminds me of how great so many places in Austin used to be. With that comes some minor caveats. Staffing is a hard thing to do in this city and I’ve seen some of the more senior staff getting shouted at by more junior staff and overall service as with everyone leaves you wanting more, but I it’s hard to ruin the overall atmosphere and quality of food and drink made here.

Overall, it was a great experience! Visited Austin Java at about 730 on a Monday morning. Was not crowded at all. Ordered a coffee and decided to order breakfast with my partner. The food was hot and fresh! Everything had great flavor! Service was friendly and attentive! I think this will become a go-to breakfast spot for us!

Good food but very disorganized. They need better management and not sure why they don't have a hostess.

We had a disappointing breakfast today. We ordered a macchiato and a cup of tea. The cup of tea had sweetener and milk in it which we did not ask for and my macchiato was a cappuccino? The “homemade” biscuits on our breakfast sandwich and biscuits and gravy were tough and hard.

I’m extremely disappointed with the quality of the food and moreover the lack of knowledge about basic espresso drinks.

I visited Austin Java on Monday morning, February 3rd, for a caffeine fix after a 45-minute barre class. Noticing two cars in the drive-thru, I decided to park and go inside, hoping to avoid the average 20-minute wait I've experienced during peak hours.

Inside, I took some time to decide on my order and asked about pecan syrup and pistachio milk availability. It had been a few weeks since I last enjoyed a latte with those ingredients, but unfortunately, they were still out of stock. I settled on a French Toast Latte, requesting extra syrup and swapping in oat milk instead of the standard option.

As I waited, I checked my phone and noticed my drink being prepared without any distinctive milk containers indicating oat milk. Concerned, I asked the barista if oat milk was used, and she admitted that it wasn't. I had to wait five minutes for a redo with the correct ingredients.

On my way home, I reflected on the experience and was grateful I had double-checked. Upon arriving home, I called Austin Java to speak with a manager, who surprisingly turned out to be the one who prepared my order incorrectly. Our conversation was disappointing—she dismissed the mistake as something "caught before it happened." Her suggestion that I could taste the difference between oat and whole milk in a syrupy latte seemed implausible, as I certainly couldn’t!

To sum up, for those who are lactose intolerant, ordering milk alternatives is about avoiding discomfort. It is unacceptable for a barista to disregard a customer's specific requests, especially when using the wrong milk, which can lead to unpleasant consequences. The attempt to downplay the error by claiming it shouldn't matter since it was caught is unhelpful and dismissive. Furthermore, it is concerning that the restaurant manager was directly responsible for this oversight and handled the situation poorly.

Ordered delivery from this place. The breakfast sandwich was good. We also ordered ordered hash browns and they sent us a mound of shoestring fries. Never seen these called hash browns but they weren’t very good.

Stopped by before my drive back to DFW. Cool decor and the merch was dope.

Poor service to start. I placed a pickup order on Doordash. Stood at the pick up location at the bar for at least 5 minutes before anyone addressed me. They weren't super busy. Didn't get a hello/how are you doing, just "have you been helped yet?". After I told them I was waiting for a to go order, another customer came up and was pleasantly greeted right away. Very weird.

Breakfast quesadilla looked promising but didn't pan out. A hefty serving, all of it super bland. The salsa was good, but besides that everything was flavorless. Some salt and pepper would've went a long way. Potatoes were cut way too big. Some of them were on the undercooked side because of this.

Got an iced Carmel latte. Nothing to ride home about. Tasted weak.

Wouldn't come here again.
