Black Star was recommended to me by a friend who travels to Austin for work. He noted this was one of his favorite spots. We stopped in for dinner and a few beers around 8pm on a Sunday night.

I had the portabella sandwich with the garlic parmesan fries and my wife ordered the smash burger. Both were delicious! We tried several beers, all very good with my favorite being the porter.

Staff were awesome, with very helpful suggestions for beer recommendations.

Visiting from NJ, not sure when we'd be back here again but would absolutely visit her again.

I love that this a queer friendly space but I was severely disappointed with the service.

The bartender were not familiar with their own menu.
My friend who is vegan asked if any of the vegetarian items could be made vegan and they said yes! But they then proceeded to serve a non-vegan dish to them, causing my friend to get sick.

The beer selection was nice, and the atmosphere is nice. But I would really love to see a menu improvement with vegan options!

What a cool old school feel. Staff is kickass, food is killer, and some of the best local beer around. I'm not usually stoked with a place but damn this place kicks ass!

We visited this place yesterday. The staff was very nice! I accidentally spilled half of my cider and they fixed me up with a new one! The food was very good, especially the spicy chicken sandwich and wings. There is 2 hour free parking outside, but it was pretty busy when we arrived at 7pm.

Just moved in, really wanted to try new place.

Amazing burger - juicy and savory; cooked to perfection; served with a special sauce, plus pickles, lettuce, tomatoes and cheese on a soft golden brown bun! And unbelievably delicious golden, super-crispy, salty, battered, french fries - far from the ordinary; cooked and served in their own individual clean, shiny, little deep-fry basket. Delicious Rambler sparkling (seltzer) water in a can, poured over a fresh glass of clean ice. Brewery on premises for local flavors. Friendly, fun atmosphere, (they had “trivia night” when we were there; helpful, friendly staff; clean tables and comfortable seating; a serious darts playing area; pleasant outdoor patio overlooking park and interesting street scenes; parking nearby and across the street. Plenty of cool businesses across the street as well. Good prices; great value. Definitely worth checking out when visiting Austin.

I live in the neighborhood and love coming here after work for drinks but paying $70 for a chicken sandwich, turkey sandwich + small basket of fries and 2 beers is highway robbery for this venue imo. I'll keep coming for the beers but until the food prices come down I will refuse to eat here again.

The menu prices aren't the real price you pay because the actual price is 20% more because there is a service charge in the small print at the bottom.

This is the worst form of US tipping culture when it's really no longer a tip at all, it's just a way to hide the real price.

Their food is okay, but their prices are even worse. I called to ask about the extra gratuity and was told (very rudely) it is mandatory 20% fee whether you order in store or online. No chicken sandwich + fries is worth $22. Sad to see this place is going down the drain.
