I've been going to mums food since it opened, its easily my favorite bbq spot in austin. I went back today for the first time in a while, it was amazing. The poutine with pastrami was HUGE, couldn't even finish it and I can really chow down. Love mums ♥️

We stopped by Mum Foods Smokehouse in Austin on a Saturday afternoon around 2 pm. It wasn’t overly crowded when we arrived, but it definitely looked like they had a busy lunch rush — always a good sign.

I ordered The Original— pastrami on sourdough rye with sauerkraut and Swiss — and it was outstanding. The pastrami was perfectly seasoned and tender, and you can really taste the quality. They make their own mustard and bread, and both were absolutely amazing. The mustard had just the right kick, and the bread was fresh and flavorful — it really elevated the whole sandwich.

We also tried the pickle plate, which was such a fun addition. It wasn’t just your standard pickles — there were all kinds of vegetables, from green tomatoes to mushrooms and green beans. Everything was crisp, bright, and delicious.

My husband ordered a Nostalgic Classic bologna and cheese, and he loved it. It was simple in the best way — comforting, flavorful, and clearly made with care.

January 28,2026. Smelled the Que from where I was working and went in to pick up for lunch for me and two other coworkers. Was gonna order brisket sandwiches, but they had burnt end sandwiches on toast bread with onions, pickles, etc. along with a Big Red and we were not disappointed. Absolutely delicious,we were all very happy with smiles on our faces. Very moist and delicious along with the Big Red. I shall return.😋

All of the food we had was fantastic, the French fries, latkes, the Rachel, even the regular brisket sandwich was better than many others I’ve had. Not sure what the holdup was to order, as the kitchen and line were often doing nothing but it took 20 minutes for the ordering line to move. Online ordering wasn’t available, but I would do that next time. Heads up, if you’re looking for a Coca Cola you’ll have to get a Mexican coke as they only have Maine root sodas.

Not a review of the restaurant, but of the pastrami. We go to the Texas Farmers Market in Cedar Park just so we can get a pound of it. I love brisket (who doesn't) but goodness, this is some of the best smoked meat we have ever had. Highly recommended.

Really loved the pastrami sandwiches, they gave us our sauerkraut on the side since we were worried we wouldn't like it. However the sauerkraut was very delicious and a great addition to the sandwich. Definitely get the mustard and Swiss on it. The cheesecake was delicious and our favorite part was the fries. The fries were crispy, hot and big. we left saying we would come back just for these fries. Parking is very limited, we pulled up 10 minutes after opening and the lot was already full and found a big line. Well worth the wait though. Service was nice and they have to go stuff readily available for you to pack up leftovers, which you will have. I was naive and said I needed my own pastrami sandwich but me and my partner could have shared, it was so large. Overall we had a great morning here.

We ordered to go: 1/2 lb pastrami, 1/2 lb brisket, ribs, coleslaw and matzo ball soup. We asked for lean since we don't like fatty meats. The pastrami was excellent, only we had to pull off the large fat cap, perhaps 1/3 of the weight. Same for the brisket. at $19.00 per 1/2 lb - while it was delicious - it was not a good value with what was left. The ribs were large and heavily coated with pepper, so I think this would mainly appeal to pepper lovers. The coleslaw was Mum's take on coleslaw - a unique flavor. And the matzo ball soup had a fluffy matzo ball, and delicious broth - plus some veggies and a bit of smoked turkey - which was a nice touch. I found it odd that they only fill the container 1/2 way with broth. At $10, I think they should fill it up.

I really wanted to like this place, but it was overall disappointing. I went with a friend and we tried everything that looked interesting, which was a lot. The best barbecue was the sausage, I would give that 4 1/2 stars on its own. We got the poutine and the fries were OK on their own, but the cheese curds were not fresh and too large. And we got the “burnt ends” option, and that just meant that they threw some slices of brisket on top. Slices of brisket, to be clear, are not burnt ends. The biggest disappointment was the pastrami sandwich with sauerkraut. The bread, which I understand is House made was not dense enough to contain the substantial fillings. The pastrami was good, but it turned into a mushy mess. The pork ribs were about average for Austin barbecue but had some kind of sweet rub on them which I am not a fan of. The potato salad was average, the house made pickles were fine, but nothing special, the collard greens were good and it was nice to see them offered as a side, and the white bread they served with the barbecue, which I think is also House made was fine but nothing to write home about. Oh they did have a pretty good beer selection, so points for that.

This place was featured on Guy Fieri’s DDD show and he had a very positive critique and tell tale facial expressions from Guy. So, my wife and I drove 22 mile down there almost immediately after watching the show. We ordered one of the supposed huge signature (at least on TV) sandwich’s and a $4 side of potato salad.

The sandwich was at least 50-60% fat and about half the size shown on TV and pictures online. So greasy, I lost grip of my drink and dropped it, even after wiping my hands off with a napkin. We went through 22 paper-towel sheets during our meal. Sandwich was so greasy and degrading to the awesome bread, it was sliding into chunks towards the end and we had to use forks to finish the last parts. The little bit of meat we got was very good and the coleslaw was very tasty. The $4 tater salad, although well presented with paprika, was about half the size of a small ice cream scoop and had very little flavor until we added salt and pepper.

I hope my experience is not indicative of how they usually serve their food, but my experience with the food was well below what DDD showed as well as some of the other Google reviews and pictures.

Doesn’t men you shouldn’t try it, but I won’t be back.

Both of these in a sandwich will shine. But these are my rankings from purely eating the meat alone.

Pastrami is a solid 4.3/5. And I don’t like pastrami but this one is quality.
Brisket is 3.9/5. It’s good. Juicy. Flavor isn’t there though to give it anything higher.
