I was unfortunately not crazy about the fish tacos. Tortilla was dry and difficult to cut with a knife and fish was dry. I was not real impressed.

Been going to Matt's for 38 years, family has been going for 60. Consistently delicious, friendly service (with staff who stick around for a long time), and overall great setting.

Loved the Tex-Mex! The Tex-Mex was excellent. I had the tacos Al Capone with queso, and the fresh iced tea was a perfect complement. The restaurant felt authentic, and the service was great.

The Bob Armstrong Dip is queso but at another level. Amp that up and get Spicy Bob. Enchaladas, tacos and flautas are all great. The grilled quail is finished in a personal cast iron skillet. The tortilla soup is loaded with chicken and not too spicy. No wonder Matt's has been a texmex staple in Austin for decades.

My wife and I eat out regularly and have been wanting to try Matt's El Rancho, we finally did on 9/196/2025. We could not have been more disappointed. From all the hype and reviews we were expecting a great dining experience, we were wrong. We ordered fish tacos and the Matt's plate and strawberry margarita's, I will start with the margarita's, we give them a 0 score, they were all bottled mix, we did not taste any tequila or Agave at all, worst we have ever had. The fish taco's were 1 piece of fish in a poor tortilla, it came with some slaw and habanero on the side. The slaw was weak, the sauce was average, tasted like bottled. The fish was OK. The Matt's plate came with 2 enchiladas and a Taco. We chose beef for both, expecting Fajita beef, we got way over seasoned ground beef, it was difficult to eat. The rice and refried beans that came with each dish were over seasoned and below average. after the meal we decided to try the Sopas, again, way below average. Our honest opinion is that you could go to any Mexican chain restaurant or small corner spot and do much better. Matt's does not come near the hype they portray, 70.00 for a poor experience, we will not be back.

This is my must visit restaurant when I am in Austin. This is one of the best restaurants in the country. Everyone I know in Austin loves it. Should be six stars!

As born and raised Austin knight, this place a more talk than it should be. Food is ok at best with crazy prices for what you get. This place is more a a popularity scene that caters to a certain crowed than a true restaurant. There are so many other places that dont charge an area and leg for delicious food.

Service was very good. Food was just okay. Like a light 6/10? Chicken enchilada was mid but refried beans were good.
We saw the long line and decide to check it out. It was good but I move had better but it’s good. Lots of people only complaint is if you have a full size car or truck good luck with parking lol

Wow, amazing food and great service. I got the tacos. It’s always fun to go to a place where you find new dishes. Very popular place for locals. We were there during the first college week so it was very busy.

If you're looking for a lively spot with fantastic food and even better drinks, this is the place to be. Our food came out incredibly quickly, but there was no compromise on quality—each dish was fresh, flavorful. The chips and salsa is delicious. I loved the strong, expertly mixed margaritas, which was perfect before the meal. The entire experience, from the delicious food to the energetic environment, was top-notch.
Note: Be ready to wait for a long ler period of time on weekends.
