The best part of Roots Chicken Shak was it is located in a HEB with other food options. The chicken had no flavor and as you can see the grease needs to be changed. I know good fried chicken and this is not good. Terry, I know you did not cook this chicken because my friend had Roots in Plano on Saturday. He said it was phenomenal. The person who served me the chicken could barely speak English but that is not my complaint. My main complaint is the grease is old and burnt. They need to change the grease often before serving patrons!!

It's not the absolute best chicken sandwich I've ever had, but it was pretty great, so it definitely was the best chicken sandwich I've ever had for $9. Considering this is a kiosk stand in an HEB, these guys are punching way above their weightclass. I kind of didn't believe it would be that good, but saw the high scores on google maps and thought I'll just try it. You should too, the hype is real. Their fried chicken fingers seem reasonably priced too.
I ordered this for lunch and I loved the fries salad and crispy duck fried chicken nuggets!
Definitely will come back!

Great food! I was visiting Austin and was trying to find somewhere to eat. I'm glad I found this spot. I got the Spicy Bird, fries, and tea. All of it was sooooo good! Seasoned well! The tea was really good! Anytime I'm in Austin, I'm getting Roots Chicken!!!
1000 times, YES. The chicken is delicious--the best chicken I've ever eaten--the portions are huge and the sides, banana pudding, cesar salad, fries. All delicious. The hand-made sauces range in heat and are all in-freaking-credible. 5-stars!
Little pricey but absolutely delicious chicken sandwich and fries. The salad was a little salty so I’d probably skip the anchovies next time. Definitely recommend!
If it’s wasn’t for the price I’d rate this lower, but it’s what you expect from a 8 dollar chicken sandwich. Wasn’t great wasn’t bad.. Average. I expected more based on the other reviews. The bread was a bit cold, didn’t care for the veggies, the chicken it self was heavily coated in batter but more batter than meat!
But can’t complain for 8 dollars…
Decided to check this out after trying Roots Southern Kitchen. I had the Dirty Bird with Koolaid and the food was nice, hot and delicious.
We have been wanting to come here for a very long time and it did not disappoint! It was so crispy, BIG, and perfectly priced. And the fact they cook with Duck Fat… it really makes it more healthy than other unhealthy oils. Top places in Austin for a chicken sandwich!
Ordering was super easy from the kiosks and it was served quick. 🔥 🐓 💯
I did both the herb mayo and the kimchi mayo.
I ordered the spicy chicken sandwich along with the duck fried fries and a side of ranch. The sandwich was really tasty but overall my favorite was the fries with the ranch it was the best.

Im hoping that I caught you all on a bad day. I love fried whole wings. So I ordered 6 whole wings. These were the worst, so unseasoned with no flavor. I’m quite shocked, I’ve always been able to count on anything under the HEB umbrella so satisfy my appetite. Today, not so much. Very disappointed.
Everything was absolutely delicious. The Spicy Bird, Duck Fat Fries, Biscuit and Wings…all amazing. Definitely my new favorite chicken spot in Austin. The HEB parking lot can be a bit chaotic at times but worth it!

I looked up a place near where is was located and this place popped up. Once I seen it was inside of HEB I didn’t want to go in bc I wanted a place to set and eat but I went anyway. I love that it is a black owned business, great customer service employee explain what things where and there is actually a place to set and eat with a bar. Definitely recommend this place great chicken sandwich and fresh!

You know those chicken sandwich wars from not too long ago??? This place should've been named in at the least the top 5 as it's way better than any of the other restaurants that were being mentioned.
Ordered the chicken sando and biscuit sando wit a side of fries and some of their sweet tea. These are made to order so there is a little wait. Pro tip: since the food is made to order and not under heat lamps, it comes out pretty hot so you may want to wait a bit before you bite into it, unless you're into that kinda of pain
The breading on the chicken, on top of having all these great spices added to it, is super crispy and light. It has such a fantastic crunch. The chicken too, is super juicy and flavorful.
The sandwich itself is great as it comes and all the toppings work perfectly together. That potato bun is something else and really brings everything together.
The biscuit is quite nice, buttery and big enough to hold that massive piece of chicken. The sweet jalapeno jam add a good kick of spice.
Oh the duck fat fries! These really dont need anything added to the them. Just enjoy them as they come as they're perfection.
