I have been a customer of Kampus Korner since my undergraduate days at LU back in 2012. The restaurant has had no significant changes until quite recently, when, it seems, the owner sold up or began renting the kitchen space to the aptly named Dorothy's Bar and Grill Inside Kampus Korner. They still serve the usual burgers and fries, but have added a steam table. Today, for the first time, I tried the steam table and was very impressed, but I want to tell a story to illustrate my point.

My grandmother passed away in 2021 at the age of 96. She had been unwell for some time prior to her death, and one of the things I missed most was her cooking. Every Saturday, my family would make a weekly trip to her home in the country and she would make us delicious meals. These were traditional southern home cooking. While I do cook a lot at home myself, I've never quite captured the flavors that she produced. When I scoped out the steam table, I was delighted to find mustard greens and okra and tomatoes in the sides section.

Today I enjoyed beef tips and rice, mustard greens, smothered okra and tomatoes, and a slice of cornbread. The beef tips were tender but not mushy and the rice was soft but not so soft that it became a formless muck. Eating the mustard greens was like taking a trip back in time. I was eight or nine again, at my grandmother's table, enjoying my usual Saturday lunch. The okra and tomatoes were well-seasoned, a little on the spicy side, but that doesn't bother me.

Before today, I'll be honest, I was skeptical about the changes to Kampus Korner. I dislike change generally, and particularly big changes to my old haunts. But after the meal I have just readily enjoyed any and all skepticism is gone. I can unreservedly endorse the new menu at Kampus Korner, and add it to the list of happy memories at that LU institution.

Definitely not the same as it was during the last few decades. Chicken special is just basically shredded chicken and tons of black pepper. Do they use other seasoning besides black pepper? Don’t visit if you were expecting the quality of food that used to be found here.

Ordered some wings and fries and a coke:Ate 3 wings and a couple of fries, drank a few sips of coke.So much salt on the wings and fries, my mouth was dry for half an hour: inedible. It’s like they are trying to give a heart attack to all fat Americans. Not only that, the coke had 0 gas.Common L

Continuing a Lamar University tradition, Kampus Korner offers great food, cold beer and now mixed drinks. The new owners rebuilt the old but beloved restaurant into a fantastic looking place. They kept much of the old menu and added many new items.

I love this place. The food is fantastic, the prices are more than reasonable. Small and family owned. Cannot recommend them enough.
