Best wine bar in the galaxy. James and Lisa are super cool folk who prioritize music. They’ve cultivated a nice, friendly scene in Blanco where all are welcome.

After reading the response from Tenuta Bianco, I feel it’s important to clarify what actually happened.

We did not “rush” to the back, nor were we ignoring a greeting. We walked in and used the restroom upon arrival, something countless patrons do at restaurants and bars every day. Before we were even given a chance to order, we were confronted and followed toward the restroom. I explicitly told the bartender we intended to purchase drinks immediately after. Despite that, we were treated as if our presence alone required monitoring.

Framing this as a “safety/operations check” does not align with how the situation was handled. Being followed to the restroom and approached with suspicion is not a normal or welcoming interaction. It felt targeted and escalated unnecessarily. The implication that there was a “safety concern” simply because we walked in and used the restroom speaks volumes.

Most importantly, my partner, a woman of color, left feeling unsafe and unwelcome. That impact matters more than the explanation. A “No Public Restroom” sign does not justify treating potential paying customers as suspicious before they’ve even had the opportunity to order.

We expected professionalism and basic courtesy. What we experienced instead was distrust from the moment we walked in.

If you are a person of color, as I am, do not expect to be welcomed here.

From the moment we walked in, the hostility was palpable. Before we even had the opportunity to order, we used the restroom- something most establishments understand is normal. Instead, we were immediately treated as “suspicious.” The owner and the woman behind the bar were both openly rude and shockingly unprofessional.

To make matters worse, the bartender actually followed my boyfriend and me toward the restroom as if we were doing something wrong. My boyfriend clearly stated that we intended to order drinks afterward, yet we were still treated with distrust and disrespect.

The behavior we experienced was discriminatory, tacky, and deeply embarrassing- for them. Establishments that operate with bias and paranoia instead of professionalism have no place in a community. I would not recommend this business to anyone who expects basic decency and respect.

Do better.

Thank you for your response, but I feel compelled to correct the version of events you’ve presented.

When my boyfriend and I walked in, we did in fact head to the restroom and your bartender followed us back there. She was directly told that we intended to order and spend money once we were finished. There was no “extended stay.” I was in the restroom for approximately three minutes before leaving. My boyfriend then briefly used it as I stepped outside because I was already uncomfortable with the tone and energy of the interaction.

As I was walking out, your bartender loudly commented, “and look, now she’s leaving,” followed by “don’t come back.” When I turned around and said “excuse me?” she immediately backtracked and claimed she hadn’t said anything. That is not a safety check. That is unprofessional and hostile behavior.

If your establishment “welcomes everyone,” being told not to return contradicts that statement entirely.

Additionally, my boyfriend was then confronted and removed from the restroom under accusations of “suspicious behavior.” Using a restroom before ordering does not constitute suspicious behavior- especially after clearly communicating intent to purchase. Framing it that way after the fact feels like an attempt to justify conduct that was inappropriate from the start.

An apology that centers “context” while minimizing the actual behavior experienced is not accountability. Accountability would acknowledge the dismissive remarks, the confrontational tone, and the escalation that followed.

If your goal truly is to create a welcoming environment, I encourage you to reflect not just on policy, but on how those policies are enforced- and how certain patrons may be treated differently in the process.

If you want to catch some of the best musical talent in the Texas Hill Country, come here. The Sunday picking circle is a must-do event whenever I'm in town. Up to a dozen local artists hang out and entertain themselves and the audience. The well-chosen wines and beers just enhance the experience. Don't miss this quintessential Blanco, TX experience.
