I no longer live in the area, but this is where I grew up. My family used to stop here on our way from Van Alstyne to southern Oklahoma, when we would go to visit family.
I was recently in town handling affairs for my elderly father. A dreadful time in any woman’s life, who has always been Daddy’s girl.
I was in town for a week, just one week to make memories, not knowing if they might be our last.
My husband and I visited Nick’s on two occasions that week. The first was a weekday morning and the food and service were delightful. That is why on our last day, before making our way back to Lexington, KY we stopped for breakfast. This was a busy Saturday morning, and the place was packed. Halfway expecting to hear a wait time, when we walked through door, but instead we were greeted by a frantic host who hollered, “Seat yourself.”
I will admit that after the week, I had and the thought of leaving my dad had left me emotionally raw.
We made our way to the back and found a table, butted less than two feet away from a serving station, that contained coffee, water pitchers and an open ice cavern. A bus boy stood over the station eating a muffin. Crumbs dribbled over the open ice, while he sipped on a drink.
I reached behind me and grabbed the coffee pot and filled the cups on our table. This is where the trouble began.
The staff was a buzz about the fact that I had poured my own coffee. Two waitress approached our table and began to scold me so loudly that the other diners began to stare. The gossip spread so fast that I could feel the burning eyes of the entire staff.
When our food arrived, I was so uncomfortable, I was afraid my food might have been tampered with. So while my husband ate I went out to our car and cried.
This memory has bothered me since. I will never set foot in this establishment, nor will I ever have a kind word to say.

Yes, it is a good place for old style cooking, great prices and good amount of food. The atmosphere was ruined by a loud mouthed profanity laced conversation from one of the regulars, I presume. Because the staff welcomed the conversation. I have visited there a few times but the welcome is cold unless you are one of the known regulars.

We just had soup ..both soups were excellent. Then we followed it up with a dessert which was also excellent. The staff were friendly and service was fast. Very enjoyable lunch experience.

The cinnamon swirl french toast is a must try. My brother even bought a loaf of their cinnamon swirl bread for $10 so he could make some for his wife the next morning. It's that good.
